Hi guys, I (77kgs) am very happy with North Neos 8m and 10m 2017 for strapless freestyle & waves, but I need a 12m kite for lighter conditions. However, the big question is what =/

I am able to milk out good lowend from my 10m Neo, but obviously there is a limit when the board speed comes down which means no strapless jumping. Therefore, I want the kite to offer better lowend than the 10m Neo, without loosing too much of the kite turning speed and it's also important that the kite is not mad tractor pulling downwind but maintain the lightness if that can be said for 12m kite.

I believe good candidates are 2017 12m Neo or Reo V4, but cannot test either (or others), so any feedback truly appreciated! I fear 12m Neo will become slough in turning which would affect the lowend relative to my faster turning 10m Neo? Same problem applies to all 12m kites I guess?

Thanks for your thoughts!

I love my Neos too, but I suspect a 12m would be a bit slow in the waves. Have you looked at the North Mono? Single strut job and nice and light, similar shape to a Neo. Couple of Gero wave riders are trying them and apparently a few of the Margs crew are sold on them. Worth a demo for a bigger wave kite I reckon.

Thanks, I thought abt Mono a well, but based on my experience with 1 strut kites and what I've read on Mono, I am not willing to give up the highend that much, hence the 3 strutter.

We don't get waves here at 12m weather, so it's purely strapless freestyle, but I still need a fast turning and fast flying kite to save me on certain tricks and avoid sinking (which slower turning kite can do).

I've heard that 2016 Neo 12m was slower, but 2017 should be better, but that's only hearsayings =/

I guess it comes down to choose between 2017 Neo, Reo and Section2 12meters, but it's really hard to get feedback on them, especially on Section2 since it's so new, sigh.

REO is better at turning over NEO but NEO has the low end.

I had a 2016 11m Neo and found that the low end wasn't as good as my smaller neo's (as in the 11m was similar in power development to other branded 11m kites instead of the 1-2 sizes smaller in the 6-8m kites.). I have a hunch if you graphed the power vs. size on the neo's it would be a flattening curve as you get bigger in kite size, rather than a straight line.

I too wouldnt mind a 12m kite to muck around in the surf with so would be keen to hear other people's experience.

What do you guys think about going the bigger board rather than bigger kite route?

I have a nugget that I use with the 10 sometimes and I am able to ride in 3 or 4 knots less than the WAM. Its not the best in decent waves, but fun, and goes up wind really well. Be interesting to try a bigger proper surfboard someday.

Yeah I can get around in 16(ish) knots on a nugget with my 10m but I have to work/watch what I'm doing with my kite and it becomes a bit of a pain in the ass

OMG what wind ranges are you looking to achieve from this quiver? I have always found too much overlap on 10/12 surf kites.

12 isn't enough sub 15 knots. And 10 is too much over 20 knots. So what - you've got two kites for 15-20?

12 - 9 - 6 Airush Waves cover 13 till too much.
AR 12m + 27Ltr surfboard (73kgs) works fine in typical arvo east coast sea breeze.
pullies not liked by some but I've never had a problem.
kites are tough / lines and bar last.

Hi guys,

Definitely try the Mono. Unbelievable low end power. We will be literally bringing a TRUCKLOAD of gear to the Midwest windfest from North, Core, Slingshot, Delta and Ozone as well as Shinn, Evolve Skateboards and maybe even the Stealth B-52 electric bike!
It's gonna be an epic test fest.

Just got a 2016 12m mono to use in the surf. Pretty decadent purchase for gero and I haven't run anything bigger than an 8m for a few years. Took it out at the back beach yesterday in pretty small surf, maybe only a couple of foot and 15knots average, 80kgs strapless on Delta Revamp 5'9". I like to have a bit of power and tend to fly and follow especially in those shifty beachy conditions where you just want to give it a good smack. Was typical North smoothness not unlike the Neo and was nicely powered with no de power pulled on. Could've gone out on the 8m Neo but would've been working it and struggling through the holes. As mentioned earlier I don't have a lot of big kite history but I found it quick enough to turn and get a couple of reo's in, even at 2 foot. It worked, it was really responsive and a heaps of fun. Be even better when the swell gets up on the reefs and you have even more room to move. My 2 cents anyway.

Well I've got a 6,7 and a 9m (upgraded the 7 to a 6 this year) and not really looking for anything to get me going under 15. Just something that I'm actually powered up around 15-17ish rather than having to work the kite. Lazy bugger I know

Slingshot SST is hands down a great wave and freestyle wave kite. It has hang time which reos don't and let's you land softer. And on the wave is second to none, drifts, predictable and fast relaunch so you don't get in the shot. They called it the sst now not the wave sst because of its versatility. Like all slingshot kites it's bomb proof,

There fixed it for ya mate

A little bit off topic but I am definitely a fan of the nugget its width and bouyancy give it the edge in light winds and make it just a lot of fun to ride with in underpowered small wave conditions, the flat rocker and volume help it to really pick up and feel the swell and I find it really makes the most out of average conditions.

My low wind combo now is the nugget and pivot 10m the low end is really good probably around 13 knots on the very lowest but at a steady 15knots i am very nicely powered. For a surfboard and waves my 10m pivot tops out at about 20knots

I am not much of a strapless freestyler but I think the pivot could be a good option for someone looking for that as it jumps and has decent hang time

thanks, any feedback on SST 12m, how's the lowend of it, please? Especially if someone could comment on how it compares to 2017 Neo 10 or 12m, thanks!

omg if you are in Melbourne you can demo my sst 12 2016 and a 11 Neo 2016. My personal opinion. SST is a great kite but the upwind and low end is not as good a NEO kite.

truly appreciated but I'm on the wrong side of the globe =/ but thanks for the feedback! Someone mentioned that the 2017 SST is better than the 2016 although SS didn't state updates which would affect the flying qualities only some structural, but who knows?
