Potential opportunity to relocate to Adelaide for work. Will be based in the CBD. Move is likely to be for a few years minimum. Part of the decision whether to move will be based on what rent will cost in comparison to what we will get for our place here, so trying to get an idea of what costs will look like for where we would like to live.
Currently living just south of Fremantle in WA, less than 10min drive from the coast. My commute is about 40mins each way to work, regardless of whether I drive or bus & train in. So happy to keep within those sort of timeframes.
Keen ocean kiter with 2 young kids (under 2), we want to try and bring our kids up with our same love for the beach (beach picnics, surf club etc) as they get older. And of course the ability for me to sneak a quick kite in after work or for an hour on the weekend if the opportunity arises - having to spend 20+ mins each way to drive to the beach pretty much kills that option.
I'm totally unfamilar with the suburbs in Adelaide - a quick scan of google maps shows me suburbs like Semaphore, Henley, Glenelg and Seacliff as the coastal suburbs, but there's minimal rentals available in-budget. Are there any suburbs I should avoid as I move in-land from there? (eg Ottoway, Woodville, Edwardstown).
Or should I consider further south?
Grew up in adelaide, moved to semaphore 2 years ago, took up kiting last december ( why haven't i been doing this earlier ). One thing you'll experience here unlike WA in the spring/summer months is daylight savings, so as long as your not finishing work at 7pm, you'll get kiting time down here till 8pm-830pm when winds are on. as for travel time adelaide doesn't really have traffic (lived in LA for a few years) So live/work anywhere westish from city (even city its self), depending on how far 15-30min to largs/tennyson spots.
I work 35min, highway driving, from beach and if left work at 3-4pm id get 2-3 hours each afternoon when winds were good. I can't wait till the new season.
If you have any more Q's, just send me a direct message.
Perfect, thanks Will! Have heard the "20-minute city" line about Adelaide a bit, so will keep that in mind. Had also forgotten about the joy of DST giving an extra hour of kiting after work - my wife may not be so impressed with this prospect ;)
I'll give you a message once we've established a couple of options, just be looking for some local knowledge a bit (ie "ooh, thats the dodgy side of that neighbourhood" type stuff).
