Going there for business for a few weeks and had this idea of taking my kitegear with me... Inspired by this post: google "Outback Kiting?? Lake Moondarra" it does not let me post links...

It didn't get very windy out there.

Some kiters from Mackay and Bowen do kite some of the lakes like Lake Burdekin, knowing they risk swimming back to shore if the wind suddenly dies down. It's not unheard of. A client of mine actually does kite there. So yeah go for it. It's the thrill of the search of wind and water.

Yeah you can but it's pretty gusty and flukey

ok im convinced. i will take my kitegear with me. will let you know how it goes. Still on 15.5m monoquiver.

Swimming back to shore won't be an issue, the lake isn't really all that big. We are talking about less than 1km to the shore in the middle.
I'm more worried about the crocodiles there to be honest.

How did you get on? Moving up there this month and deciding whether to sell my gear or not...

sorry jimma. i didn't manage to fit my kite gear into my car with all the other stuff in it. :/

it looks like the sea is just big enough to go out and probs windy enough. there is no good launch area though from what I could see.
