Hi there,

My boyfriend and I are from Santa Barbara, California and are planning a kiting trip from Dec 15 through the end of March. We were thinking of first visiting Western and Southern Australia, then perhaps a month in Tasmania (February?), followed by March in New Zealand's Taranaki area.

For wave kiting I understand the Northwest area of Tasmania is ideal. I'm wondering if anyone can give us advice on where we might want to base ourselves. Is there an ideal town for kiting? Does anyone know of homes for rent? Is Feb a good time of year for this? What are the best beaches, etc? Will we need a 4 wheel drive vehicle? Is it better to rent a camper van instead of a house?

If anyone has info to share I'd be super appreciative. I'm finding info for the other areas but Tasmania seems a little more difficult to fully understand. We are not super budget conscious but don't have an unlimited budget either.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Cheers,

Julie

Wave kiting on the north west is pretty awesome. Stanley is a pretty good spot up that way to base yourself as it caters for a lot of wind directions and is about 50 minutes drive from Marrawah(the main surf spots). There are also places to stay here but it is remote and not much in the way of other attractions. It would be on my list for sure if kiting was the purpose of the trip and I had your time frame.

The east coast is awesome as well but not going to be quite as consistent with swell and wind but at that time of year it's would be worth considering for sure, beaches stretch all the way up and it's just a matter of picking the best one. There are a lot of other attractions and things to do in this area.

Hobart kiters have a range of beaches that keep our kite froth satisfied but aren't going to be as world class as the NW waves but still a fun and you might even get some locals on the typical afternoon breeze to have a chat and pop the top of a coldie with!

We are a small island with pretty awesome beaches all the way around. Kites in the sky isn't going to be the thing to look for as there aren't that many here, if it looks good, it probably is.

February is not our best season though.

Not that we seem to have a best season any more. This year certainly isn't. But by February the seabreezes have gone, and we don't tend to get as many good fronts coming through.

If I was planning a kiting trip in Tassie, Stanley would be a great place to be. But I would make sure I had transport and flexibility to drive to wherever the wind was going to be best

Thanks to both of you - this is super helpful information. Will continue my research and might have another question or two. So excited for this trip!
