Just saw this is the Surf Forum:
I was having a fun surf this arvo. The breeze was whipping up a few decent little runners at the local groyne... then one of the kite fraternity decided it would be a good idea to crash his kite right on me. And I mean right on my...kite to the head first, then tangled in his line. I had a few rather scary seconds thinking I was going to lose my head or an arm as the wind caught in the kite and it lifted off. Don't know how, but a bit of fate intervened and got out of it with just some abrasions and bruising to both arms, my back and my face...missed my eye by a mm or so.
Has this happened to anyone else? I can't be the only one. It could have easily ended very very badly. To make matters worse there were a bunch of small kids both surfing and swimming. What are laws regarding kiting proximity to surfers/swimmers? Disaster waiting to happen.
Floreat Groyne.
The kiters seem to be creeping a bit closer in each season.
Like everything I suppose, the rippers are OK but all you need is one kook...
Crazy thing was, his attitude was almost that it was my fault as he thought, because it was windy, the kiters should have the break to themselves...
Seriously, this is a summer grom surf spot. Could have KO'd a kid.
I mean FFS what is so hard about staying clear of surfers and swimmers?
That is bad reading. WTF was this guy thinking? Stay clear of other beach users - especially if you don't have the skills to keep your kite in the air!!
"Bruising to both arms back and face"
how many kites hit him?
Wrong attitude
one kite hitting him is one too many, can't fkn blame him at all for being upset

Apologies what was I thinking,
mental note to self to be serious next time I post something through fear I may offend some poor Kiter who takes life too seriously.
Thanks for your concern pezza... For the record, the bump to my head was from the kite. The rest of the damage was from old mate trying to skin me by relaunching his kite while i was still tangled in his lines...good times!
Cheers to everyone else for giving an incident like this seriousness it deserves.

Hey MickCam,
As a kiter, I'm really sorry to hear about what happened to you as a result of some f88kwit kiter.
I'm sure the vast majority of kiters feel the same way. Generally speaking, the kiting community in Perth are a sensible, respectful lot.
But as with any group, there's always a few numbnuts. And there's always garden variety, infantile trolls like pezza trying to get a rise out of people. Fools like him just can't help themselves, poor thing.
I'm glad you posted. Please don't paint all of us with the same brush as the idiot who ignored the rules, and the idiot troll looking for the attention he so clearly lacks.
cheers, B

Now now no need for the name calling!!! ( idiot troll and infantile troll)
so far all I asked was how many kites hit him?
That sounds bad MickCam. Glad you came through it relatively OK.
A tight line across your neck could easily be fatal.
A timely reminder to the downwind crew to give the surfers and swimmers a bit of space. The pessimist in me says a serious wounding of an innocent swimmer/surfer/dog walker is only a matter of time given the increasing number of kiters. And even the most seasoned kiters occasionally put their kite down...
A very unfortunate event that is for sure and kiters should stay down wind especially if their skills are low.
However..... it is funny how only a few years ago surfers were being hammered for surfing around and colliding with swimmers. Mickcam stated he was surfing around swimmers.
Is this a case of the kettle calling the pot black???
Your angry and you got regrettably hurt but you were surfing...by your own admission... around swimmers.
What would your excuse be if your board accidently hit a swimmer?
