I will be helping a mate bring a 30 footer from Airlie to Tin Can Bay next week.

Having never been in this part of our beautiful country before I was hoping for some DO's & DONT's from the locals.

I have "Cruising the Coral Coast" & QLD Beacon to Beacon Guides, a Good Chartplotter on the boat as well as Navionics on a couple of phones. I also have Memory Maps, OpenCPN & Grib Files on my Laptop (No GPS hooked up tho). Also printed off the tide charts.

The weather isn't looking too flash to start with but we are in no real hurry & I want to see a few of the sights.

Cheers
Larry

If you are heading south in a 30 footer you wont make huge mileages in a day and there are some blank spots as far as both provisioning and communication are concerned. Airlie to Shaw or the Smith group, the Perceys (don't miss Whites Bay if you have a northerly) then 4 days to Roslyn Bay. Noel Patric's "Cruising the Curtis Coast" is by far the best guide for the trip from the Smiths to Bundaberg. Sorry Alan.
Don't be afraid of the Narrows, night or day, they are well lit. I've been through more times than I can remember. Lucas has the tide timing about right.
Fishermans Wharf marina in Urangan is good and I would be happy to take you in to town for supplies if I am home. Just send me a message.

The boat that was anchored off the marina at Yeppon is "The Notorious" a fifteenth century replica Caravel. the bloke built it on his own using mainly windfall Monterey Pine that he reclaimed. It was built without plans as none existed when the ships were "eyeball" built. Steering wheels had not yet been invented so she is steered by a whipstick.
He charges people $5 dollars to go on board and have a look, it's worth the $5, he done an outstanding job
