Evening all. Second post...feedback last time was awesome. I'm remote on satellite and low bandwidth so don't have ability for massive searches... looking to pick your minds instead.

I think I've found my first boat... I'm just recalculating costs.

Can anyone tell me briefly what I'm looking at cost p/a for insurance. 110k boat. 42ft. Seaworthy in good nick.
I'm not too sure about other variables would be considered but I need this purchase ASAP IOT have a place to live to be berthed at a marina. I don't have the skills ATM to sail her and will not be until I gain them through lessons and some racing on the Tamar (thanks ben (rumblefish) fingers crossed!).

Thanks in advance all for any info.

Hi Aus,
I'm looking at Lonnies Seaport...and yeh low tide isn't going to be perfect that's for sure but Gravelly and Beauty Point is too far out of town. Anyone here berthed there much before?

I'm getting one of the local lasses (sailing coach and professional boat mover) to check her out for me before making an offer and having her surveyed. My fingers are crossed but I'm pretty positive that she (the boat) will come up good.

Theres been a fair bit of chat about local boat insurance on this forum, have a search and you should find it..

One thing though - if you find the insurer you contact tries to force you to get a survey (expensive and if you know your boat totally useless) before insuring don't necessarily fall for it.

Club Marine, the supposedly boatie supporter insurance company wouldn't insure my seaworthy Matzcraft 35 without a survey. Pathetic after I have insured with them many times and only ever made a claim for a stolen outboard motor 20 years ago.

I rang YOUI who advertise on TV after a friend suggested I do so, they insured it immediately no problem over the phone.

Similar for a friend with a Hutton 25 and I think a Mottle33 owner on this forum as well.

" I need this purchase ASAP"

Going into a purchase admitting this fact to the world is not a good way to start negotiations.

As you can see from another thread on this site, even yachting icons like Jarkans, are selling at much reduced prices. In some cases there is also a huge difference in price between asking and final price.

T
ake a deep breath, and ask around on value for the particular boat. If you do not know a lot about boats, a professional survey from (and you need to check this), an independant surveyor, is important once you have decided this is the boat for you. A survey most likely will lead to price negotiating points.

Yeh ack that Yara. Not something I'm going into negotiations with mate. Have been looking for 6 months and finally one ticks the boxes. I have compared to similar online boats and exhausted comments online also. Survey is a gimme as far as I'm concerned ie definitely getting one as well as getting a professional yachtsman to look her over.

I rang Youi and they said they don't do over 12m. Back to the phone...

Yep - Club Marine are awful for second hand boats. I was getting a survey on mine anyways when I got it slipped the first time (to let me know what needed to be done), but even with a survey report, Club Marine wouldn't insure it as I asked for a value of only $2000. The rep straight out said that they don't insure anything that's worth less than $1000 a foot - which automatically rules out pretty much anything under 30ft.

Youi on the other hand, weren't even interested in a survey and quoted me a pretty good price straight off on third party insurance, with the option to add racing cover when I was ready. Told them I just needed to check with my wife, they put me on hold and came back 2 mins later with a price $15 a month less. So yeh, really easy to get a good price from.

Haven't come across anyone who's needed to claim Youi boat insurance yet, but I know their Motorcycle guys were pretty good on paying up.

A mate of mine had to claim on his Youi house insurance. They refused to pay up even when their own assessor decided on the claim value. It turned out to be an absolute disaster for him. Beware.

The reason they advertise so much is they don't get much repeat or word of mouth business.

Warning do not do the Youi online quote request unless you want a phone call with endless questions and time wasting.

What material is the boat built with?
If it is timber, you may have a bit of trouble, but you can try Tudor Insurance in Victoria, they will cover timber boats, but you may need a survey.
My boat is insured with them.

She's glass... I found a website that gave me a quote online without all the Bull$#*! that Warwick was talking about.
$103 a month for 42 ft Glass. Only needed an approximation to plan finances.

Talk to Pantenius ..... they are boat people and easy to deal with. Actually know boats and made it almost a pleasant experience.

I am very happy with them and yes they will require a survey report but if you are getting it done, easy peasy.

Don't understand why people shy away from surveys, but each to their own.

Because there are not many so called "surveyors" who have half a clue about what they are surveying.

when youi ring you while you are doing the quote it is actually a good thing you can tell them all about the boat or car where it is kept then they give you a price and you say naaaa to dear mate when it probably wasnt bad then he refers to his supervisor and hey a much better price all good

And because they insist on it being done by a surveyor who costs and arm and a leg rather than a shipwright. My marina people know my boat better than anybody but me but they aren't allowed to do the insurance survey.

And getting a survey on a boat you know intimately by a clutz who will tell you that your hatch leaks and the gel coat has some cracking is a waste of time and money.

I can understand insurance companies wanting a survey on a boat that has little maintenance history but I have folders of receipts for work and parts to keep MB seaworthy.

Youi just had another phone call to give me a quote.
Firstly girl had no idea what a boat is or a swing mooring.
Secondly after numerous questions said sorry can not insure my boat as worth too much. The value was an earlier question and not that high on todays prices.

My x had a car claim and said they paid up ok.

Only complaint was the lack of professional in dealing with them....said the call centre was like a clown corner. ...wanted to talk about anything but the insurance matter. Drove her crazy trying talk to them on the phone when they just wanted to waste time asking about her personal life and plans for the weekend and how often do you bath your dog...etc...etc.

It may also be worth getting a quote from Trident. I pay about $700 per year, which includes $10M liability.
They had a better price than Club Marine when I got quotes a few years ago. They do require a survey, and will question you about the age of your standing rigging.

Guess I will mention it again but I am insured with Pantenius ... they insure boats and only boats, (not cars, bikes, houses or your mother in law etc) from pleasure craft thro' to commercial and easy to deal with, polite and do not ask a lot of stupid questions.

Policy price I found better than the others and does include "racing risk" but does have a range of other inclusions that others don't.

They do ask for survey report and a rig condition report neither of which are particular onerous.

In the end tho' it is what works for you and you alone as my requirements are different from your and from others, eg "racing risk" was a must as was insuring the carbon bits and pieces on my boat.
