Hi I am new to this forum, good to find what appears to be more of an Aussie forum. I have been a long time "lurker" but have finally registered.

I am planning to visit Lady Musgrave next week and I notice it looks like about 20 knots out there Tuesday Wednesday when I plan to stop in there.
Can anyone advise as to what the lagoon is like in those conditions ?

I am almost embarrased to admit on this forum that we will be in a stink boat but I come from a long sailing history..please forgive me.

Many thansk for any advise.

Hello Andrew12

the reef in the lagoon is always covered by water. Therefore, whilst it may interrupt the force of the ocean outside, it certainly does not stop it.

Last time I was out there, in 2010, there were no public moorings; just anchoring. The bottom - between bommies - is good, firm holding...all sand.

We spent four days out there in conditions of 0-15. On predictions of a night of 15-20, we decided to head for Pancake Creek, an entire days sail away for us. What actually ensued was a week in Pancake, sitting out 25-30. Turned out to be a good move.

A couple of diehards were left in the lagoon at Lady Musgrave and didn't seem to have any plans to move.

I guess it comes down to how uncomfortable you want to be; and the faith you place in your anchor.

Hope this helps.

Tracey

Welcome to the forum, and congratulations on coming out so quickly. It took me 4 years on this forum to admit I too have a stink boat. But currently in the process of trying to rectify that problem.

My parents live in Agnes Water/1770. I haven't stayed out at LM so can't help in that regard, but have been out that way a little. What you do have on your side is horse power. You will be able to 'wait it out' longer then our yachty friends before making a quick run for Pancake Creek.

Had a couple of very big and very very flash stink boats anchored out there next to us New Years eve 2013.

They were those ones that play loud music and have very bright multicoloured lights that shine down off their bums under the water. They probably shared our sentiments as to the quality of neighbors as they saw us sleeping in sleeping bags on the deck and boosting big airs over the stern in between joints and beers!

Yes Guilty as charged ! Having sailed for many years since my Sabot days when I was I don't know 12 or something, right through, I am sixty now and about twenty boats later! My father was an Olympic yachtsman back 1948 so I was kind of born into it but now stink boats fill the bill, literally. Yes guilty of flashy lights, sometimes loud music and maybe a roach or beer could be appear as well.
But not a Riv wakemaker I am not and never will be that.

We travel at a sedate speed and know our limitations most of the time anyway.

Have cruised mainly down south,Sydney, Gippsland lakes, Tassie, this is our first venture North so pretty excited to check it all out as best we can.

I will definitely post a report and maybe a pic or two.

You guys are funny.

Sabot same,

Hi Andrew , I have stayed in Musgrave in 15-20's , no issues as the holding is good.
Also found Fitzroy lagoon just as good, but better fishing!

Comments from sailors who have done both Lady Musgrave and Bait Reef say that Bait Reef has better coral and whales!

Hoping to get out there latter this week.

Sent from the Piles Bowen Marina.

when I entered lady Musgrave whilst laying my Anchor I was circled by a 4 meter Tiger shark hence my decision not to enter the water and set sail the ffollowing day! My mate arrived a week later and spent 2 weeks there at anchor kitesurfing and free diving.

I have spent many nights at Bait reef anything over 22 knots I would highly recomend setting sail back to Hook or Hayman Islands.

There are 5 public moorings inside the atoll and anchoring is not advised unless all the moorings are taken.

The 12 bommies guarding the western entrance are spectacular!
Some care needs to be taken on falling and rising tides as rips can make things a bit challenging. Best for snorkelling drift towing your tender behind you.
For diving you can dive from your tender by attaching a rope to the entrance stick and dive on the slack tide one hour before or after. You can also dive directly from your vessels mooring.

There is also a mooring on the southern side only avalible in Northerlys. Crystal clear vis and a 50 meter wall dive.

The dive shop in Able point Marina should do you a good price on hire Bottles and equipment if needed.

regards

Well we did it !

We had a fantastic trip to Lady Musgrave for the most part...we had two perfect days and then found out what 35 knots was like in the lagoon!

Not really good... quite large waves, not much margin for error if your anchor dragged.

My recommendation is not to be there in those winds, however while we were there a 150' Super yacht "Sovereign" powered in through the pass with a moments hesitation, he must have been there before. After they broke there bridle they bailed out.

We broke two bridles that were doubled up.

I would recommend to get up close the island as we did not , you can get better protection there in a Southerly.

When we came through the pass it was at the low end of the tide still running out like a river of rapids, and it looks NARROW!! Massive adrenalin rush going through there the first time!

We then went to Pancake Creek and then Yellow Patch, Great Kepple ..fantastic.

Have pics but until I get home I cant post them . I have video of blow but I don't think I can post it ..to big file ??
Currently at Yeppoon and going back to work for a few weeks.

Then Whitsundays but am I mad for planning to keep boat up there January and Feb?? People are telling me I am.
