Hi All,

We've recently moved to Sutherland Shire and looking to relocate my Tasman 26 to Port Hacking (currently in Lake Macquarie).

Does anyone have any local advice on a good location for a mooring? Preferably with somewhere to keep the dinghy and a public jetty nearby.

I don't mind staying west so long as the channels are deep enough to get out (we draw about 1.5m).

I've had a look at the priority waiting list and don't mind a bit of a wait but preferably not years :)

Thanks in advance!

Welcome!
Both Gunnamatta and Burraner bays are available. My triton 24 is moored in burraneer bay, close to the marina, 200m away from a boat ramp (water st). It's a nice place and well protected (except from southerly blows). You can't leave your dinghy though, mine goes in the car!
There is probably more options to leave the dinghy if you get a place close to wally's wharf, same bay, where there is also a public jetty.

I draw the same and the channel is ok most of the time, we ran aground only once in two years. Just pretend your are fishing!

West of burranneer bay is really nice but too far from the ocean in my opinion.

A mate and I had a Flying 15 (Uffa Fox 20 footer.) on a mooring right in front of the Yowie Bay Yacht Club many years ago.

It was a top spot. We used to sail regularly to Jibbon Beach for BBQs and sail outside too!!

Access to the club house was a bit different though. It was via a helical staircase. Most would call it a spiral staircase but that term is incorrect. It is a long time ago but we were members of the club and the facilities were great. Hot showers and dinghy storage at a reasonable price and nobody there during the week. Parking in the street was good. You ought to check it out as you are moving into the area.

The helical staircase made getting a dinghy to the water somewhat problematical. Our dinghy was a Clark Rubber 6 foot inflateable which served us well.

Port Hacking is an amazing place.

You might want to ask a few owners how they are coping with the apparent outbreak of small barnacles that are currently infesting parts of the port.

Hi SS,
I live, and have a yacht on a mooring, on Yowie Bay - and I spend a good deal of my (now retired) life in a kayak on Port Hacking.
The port is plenty deep enough in all of the bays, and basically OK for a 1.5m draft if you stay in the well marked channels between them. The shallowest part is the area at the head of Burraneer Bay and even at the lowest of tides you should even be OK there. (I have a lift keel and usually raise it a bit through there through habit). If that bit bothers you then you are essentially confined to a mooring in Gunnamatta Bay, or Bundeena.
Cisco's reference to access via the sailing club in Yowie Bay is no longer applicable. The combination of fishers leaving a mess on the pontoon, and some graffiti and vandalism issues, has forced the club/council to erect a fence and locked gate - so there is no longer any water access (other than at the club on Sunday afternoon racing in Summer) anywhere south of the Wonga Road boat ramp on the western side of the bay. The marina next to the boat ramp does have dinghy storage but it is long time since I used it and I am uncertain of costs. There is access and capacity for dinghy storage (chained to a tree) at the foot of the bay, both through a walkway off Yarraga Place, and next to the Camellia Gardens - and similarly at the end of Taren Road on the eastern side of the bay.
The next access is Gannons Bay (public walking access and dinghy chained to tree) off Boomerang St and then a similar setup adjacent to the Lilli Pilli baths and Sea Scouts shed.
After that it is public ramps at Dolans Bay and Burraneer bay (Water st) but I can't think of too many other spots with good water access for dinghy launch/storage close to available moorings. Gunnamatta Bay has a few more options but moorings will be harder to procure.
The Maritime (or RMS or whatever they are called this week) have their boat(s) based at the Burraneer Bay marina - and I have found the on-water people to be particularly helpful - unlike the office. It might be worth going down there at a time that suits them and I am sure they will offer good advice.

Hi SS
I Have a mooring in Gunnamatta, went on the wait list and after about 3 month my lotto ball came up. I decided to join a club and this gives good acccess to the boat. You can used the club dingy's or take it easy on the tender service during the week end. Membership is not too bad, and I think is great value, if you consider access to mariner, water etc and is a great set up for picking up friends.
You could also try Dolans Bay mariner for one of their moorings.

cheers Richard
