So I'm new to sailing (no experience) and have been restoring a RedWitch here in Adelaide SA to its original glory. To be honest I didn't need to do a whole lot but I have replaced a good amount of rigging hardware and done a little painting.

I've not had added any sails before nor have I raised them but then again we haven't left the trailer yet. I don't want to add sails on the trailer as I'm worrying if I accidentally pull in a sheet a gust might pull it all over. I have added the boom before without the mainsail but it obviously droops at the rear.

My question is, should there be a cable or something that connects to the rear of the boom (where the outhaul is) that hangs it from the mast head?

Thanks in advance

I guess you are talking about a topping lift. The mainsail on a Redwitch is not that big and probably most people would sail the boat more like a sailing dinghy. The topping lift is handy when raising and lowering the sail and dropping in a reef etc. It takes the weight off the slugs. I would use 4mm Spectra to do the job. It all depends on what sort of sailing you envisage. Just general cruising about it is handy to be able to support the boom at anchor to keep it clear of the cockpit and maybe support some shade arrangement.

Lots of good reading here.

when at anchor or hard stand I use the main sheet to keep the boom level and allow ease of access to the cabin and the deck.
On my Farr 740 I had a short length of cable attached to the back stay with a "d" shackle attached that connected to the boom end allowing to secure easily at anchor to support a shade cover.

Awesome thanks guys. I wasn't sure if there was a permanent cable. I actually come across a video on YouTube of a guy rigging his investigator 563 and did have the topping lift. But to me it did look as if it was attached permanently.

Because of that video I was hoping I wasn't missing something...

I'm planning on taking my Witch to Binks Marine this week or next for a rigging tune up and make sure I'm good to go. I've got no idea how to tension cables properly but best left to the experts.

Thanks guys

Kris
