In practice a higher scope ratio seems to hold better in shallower water. I was anchored in the Burnett Heads basin for a year and a half. It is a sloppy bottom and my 1.7 meter draught yacht would tickle the bottom on low tide.

With 20 meters of chain out it would drag in a blow. So that is a 10:1 scope. With 30 meters out she would stay put and that is a 15:1 scope.

If your mooring position is exposed to movement by tides, wind changes and chop, I believe you will be better off with rope tackle than chain due to the wear factor of the chain.

There have been a number of mooring threads in this forum. Have a trawl through the pages and read them. There is a lot of collective knowledge and experience contained therein.
