I want to know what paddle length people are using for short board SUP surfing and SUP foil surfing.

I have had my paddle length at 6-8" above my head for some years. It's been fine for paddling and adequate for surfing.

I have recently switched to a 7'8" Sunova 2in1 for surfing and to pursue surf foiling and I'm finding the paddle is way too long for surfing. I find I need to go for a later takeoff with more short-burst acceleration and that calls for a lower grip on the paddle.

Based on where my upper hand grabs when catching waves I can loose 8-10 inches off the paddle. That brings it down to head height or a touch below.

I'm wondering what paddle length rule other people are following.

Hi Gorgo.
What I have found when going too short on paddle length is damage to the rails of the SUP. The edge of the blade can strike the rails more often.
My board is only 7ft for foiling.
I have experienced this more so when foiling due to trying to turn the board around in time before catching a wave. Trying much harder than normal. And also just as the board lifts higher than the water level I can miss the blade digging into the water as I am paddling hard which it then bangs hard against the rail. Usually happens on the end of my turn going forward.
This happens mainly from my shorter paddle which is as high as my forehead.
My longer paddle is about 4 to 6 inches above my head. So therefore it is mainly the round paddle shaft that hits the rails of my board.
In my view I would only take 2 inches off your paddle length then maybe only 1 inch if needed after that. It all depends on your style. Some dig deeper than others.
Cheers
Wil

Hey gorgo
I'm 6ft and my quickblade paddle handles sit mid forehead @ 70".
I use this for my sup boards and 6'6, Smik foil board.
I don't have any issues with rails .takes a bit of getting use too..dropping down sizes but now cant imagine going back.

Gorgo Just cut it at your height, that's basically the "mandatory" size in a SUPer progression for a surfing paddle.

Then, once you are used to it you can decide to try shorter or longer. Shorter is great in hollow waves, or vertical surfing in the pocket. Longer may be better for stylish longboard SUPing, ...

Seajuice, you need to dig more your paddle in the water...
