Hey all,

I'm a mid-30's bloke, I used to post on Seabreeze a few years ago in the windsurfing section. I have since had a kid and the pace of life has changed a bit. While our toddler is napping I enjoy punting around on flatwater and I have just had my first 2 sessions on fun 1-footers, flapping around in the water making an idiot of myself, paddling, surfing, drowning and laughing underneath a soaked wide brimmed hat.

I've done some trawling through the threads looking for a few pointers on places to go but haven't found much newbie SUP content. There are plenty of exceptionally talented lads who ride big waves and post commercial quality video's using drones. You guys blow my mind and are very inspiring, but I'll never be able to join that crowd, so thought I'd start this thread and see who responds, maybe there are other Dads and everday-Joe's like me in Perth looking for clean 1-footers to have some weekend fun?

Questions for discussion -

Where are the best spots for tiny 1-2 foot wave fun? Preferably where there aren't surfers scowling at us... I have tried Trigg once and it was good, and I tried a little reef break at Watermans Bay along the stretch of coast between North Beach and Marmion... but where else is good for newbies seeking little running waves?

Where do you head for flatwater cruising? My favourites are Swan River in Peppy Grove, Hillary's Boat Harbour, and the Swan River between the Fremantle bridge and Swan Yacht Club. I am interested in where people go for peace and serenity and interesting underwater scenery...

What equipment do you have? Have you made an upgrade that helped you have more fun? I'm starting out with a BIC Ace-Tec 10'6 as it is really stable and gives me the ability to put a mast in it and punt around windsurfing when I get the chance. Recently I have been considering a Gaff Helmet in case my board whacks me in the head one day. Any/all suggestions greatly appreciated but I don't have a big budget as most of my income is spent on nappies and small packets of squeezy yoghurt.

? are you a robot or a noob to both sup surfing and seabreeze forum?
If the later, welcome.
Friendly warning. THere are not a lot of places to surf sup in Perth, AND there are a lot of people that surf, sup surf, and do a lot of other water sports in beaches.
DONT just grab ur new sup and paddle out on ur knees straight into a busy surf break.
Do your internet research on how to be respectful of lineups, how to catch a wave and how to even paddle a board.
Practice on flat water first preferably in quiet locations.
Learn to fall, biggest thing i see is people falling kick their board away. if you are in a busy surf area you do not want to do this or you will hurt someone.
Learn the rules of right of way, dropping in and snaking.
Watch. watch surfers, suppers and how the waves and breaks work.
Drive along our beautiful coast and you will see where others do it.
enjoy, be friendly, say hi, prepare for evil glares from some. there are breaks where everyone is friendly, there are breaks where SUP is frowned upon (or anything different for that matter).
I generally find best way to get into a spot is paddle up, and then sit down with the other surfers and say gday.
good luck.
