Hi all,
Im looking for a mid length Old style Board.
I normally ride a DT 4 9'2 Takayama, or a 9'6 Mc Tavish (Woody) but want to step a little down, keeping as much as possible the paddle power and stability.
Im thinking in Takayamas Howard Special Mini , Flo Egg or Stone Steps 2.
Whic you think should be best of the 3?

Also, For the Takayamas i havre to wait months, and in my location, someone is offering me a Modern Black Fish in a very good price... could be an option until the DT arrives... What you think about that modern boards? they are worth it?

Thanks

Hi CesarSurfer,
A good price on a Modern Blackbird? How much is he going to pay you to take it?

I like the look of all the Taks (except the Stone Steps models). I really don't think you can go too far wrong with any of them. You don't have them on your list, but the Scorpion and the NR3 look to me like the more 'longboardy' midlengths and give you that width under the chest and nose that should give you that stability and paddle power. But as a former shortboarder, that flo egg really appeals. The Howard Mini gets good reports too and you can google lots of Devon Howard ripping (old school style) on it.
But... if it HAS to be one of the three, combing old-school, stability and paddle power... my two cents goes for the Howard Mini. (Haven't surfed one but have held one under my arm and wanted to run away with it to Vegas and get married).
Good luck.
The sooner you order, the sooner it arrives!

The flo egg is very good, less performance orientated than the Howard but very similar.
The flo egg is more Tudor / classical style egg when he rode for DT and the Howard is more a modern take on the same concept.

If your main concern are stability and paddle power as greeny said look at the scorpion.

I'd love to try a Howard Mini. I have had a lot of different mid-lengths and about all I surf now. I reckon the Scorpion will be just like a smaller longboard, the Flow Egg will be like a funboard but the Howard looks like it has those traditional mid-length characteristics.

I'd also keen to try a Lost Smooth Operator which looks a bit similar.

I think the wait is months for any board at the moment. I put an order through a local Shaper on 4 Jan and blank still hasn't been shaped yet.

Hi Csurfer,

Not a Takayama but well worth a though is either the Walden mini magic dual core 7'6, or the Stewart 7'6 tuflite.

I've ridden a heap of mids including a Takayama Scorpion and think the older version 7'8 Waldon Mini Magic that I have is a cut above all of them. Not the nicest looking board but it outperforms anything else I have ridden. Paddles like a 8'6 but manoeuvres like a 6'10. Two plus one fins and is very fast through sections whilst still being able to turn on a dime.

Just my two cents worth to confuse you more, your welcome.

Yeah I know, but the Walden mini although technically a mini Mal is better than any mid I have ever ridden. Throws around like a shorty, but paddles in like a Mal, even let's you steal 5 toes on the nose with the fat front on it.

Bought it on an impulse as a bit of used retail therapy. So glad I did, seriously looking at getting it copied by a local shaper in better construction.

Lesson learnt for me, never right off anything till you've ridden it.

You didn't? Surely you didn't?

"Paddles like a longboard, surfs like a shortboard." That is always rot. Sorry, but it is.

I watched an older bloke 50-60 odd ripping on a Tak scorpion probably around 6'8, surfing better than the majority half his age

Ps I have surfed your board and it is nothing like you have described, besides it being an awesome paddler
