Hey everyone

Been sailing a bit recently and noticed that one of the battons on a sail has broken (i think?) right near the mast sleve and im prity sure might start causing damage to the sail.

Is there any way to mabey repair this or at least prevent it from damaging the sail? Can post pictures if needed.

Cheers

You need to replace the batten. Pull out the long section from the leech. Small section at luff is a little more tricky. You need to work out what side of the sail the batten pocket is on, unpick the stitching on the batten pocket about 2 cm exposing the remaining broken bit of batten, then pull it out (needle nose pliers work well). Then using some waxed cotton (or alike), sew the batten pocket (use the original holes made by the sewing maching for neat finish). Then get a spare batten (probably just rod part) from a shop or sail maker, cut to length and bobs bubs uncle.

Alternative 1, make a perpandicular cut in batten pocket to remove broken bit. repair with batten pocket sticky thing.

Alternative 2, take it to a sail maker...

I don't recommend sliding a small piece of batten out down the entire batten pocket. This can be very difficult and you may end up with a LOT of wrinkly monofilm.

Depending out how frayed the break is, you my be lucky enough to just be able to slide the little bit out of the pocket. But yes it can be a little tricky.

my main wave sail has a broken batten, and its the sail i use the most, it has been broken for about a year now, and it hasnt causd any damage, but my break is a split down the center, not and actual snap. so if its a split you should be fine for a while to get it repard by a sail amker, in my opinion its worth getting some one to repair for you becasue if they f%&k up your sail, you can blaim them and try get compensation

Yeah it's snapped completely in half and is pushing out. It's already made a hole in the batton pocket unfortunatley. Ill see what i can do.

Easier... Pull the short broken bit of batten out of the hole provided

Also, to get the long piece out, at the end of the sail near the batton is an allen key screw. If i loosen that will the batton come out. If not how do i get the batton out of the sail and then replace it, i've never had to do it in my life which i suppose is a good thing.

That's right. Take all the tension off the batten and then twist the tensioner free of whatever holds it in place. You can then remove the tensionser and then the batten (tip: push the tensioner and batten in a little once tension released, this will make it easier to get out).

Thanks everyone but my dads just taken it down to the local store who say they can get the part from gaastra, put it in and repair the hole it's made for not to much. Decided to go that way as they will probably do a better job than we would.

Cheers though

P.S: dzub, luckily it's our big sail so i wouldn't use it, but we've just had 5 days down at Goolwa. Sailed every day and had a great time so i don't realy think were going to go anywhere this weekend. Were all a bit tired. Also damaged one of our boards again but this time we have no idea how because neither me my dad or my brother catepulted for the hole trip. Coming back into school aswell so got to get ready .

ended up taking the sail down to the local store and they just gave us an old batton that was out the back. Now all we got to do is take out some of the one we got, an put it all back together which da guy there showed us how to do. Should be all good and didn't cost a thing.

Thanks again for all the help.
