I am currently working on a design project based on the disposal or re-use of windsurfing and surf boards. Some of the questions I am trying to answer are:
1) What is the best way to dispose of a board?
2) Can they possibly be re-used for anything else? (buoy, bench, water toy etc.)
3) What have people tried in the past?
If anyone has any ideas and/or information about the possible re-use of boards or their safe and ecological disposal, please reply. Some day there will be a solution to this "crazy uncle in the attic" for our otherwise very ecological sport - I promise!!!
Thanks everyone!
Charles.

I remember they used to burn well when arranged in a pyre on the beach and doused with a bit of petrol, but I don't think they like you doing that anymore.

hi,
one possible way to use them is, as you mentioned, as bench. my little brother cut a real old retro-board in three pieces. he did so to an old mast as well and put everything together as a hifi/tv - rack. looks pretty funny and makes you think of windsurfing evertime you see it.
i've also seen armchairs made out of surfboards. but i think they made them on purpose. they looked like a surfboard which had been bended to an S. i cannot imagine bending an old board, but however, its an inspiration.
so far!

I have seen a rowing catamaran made of two old windsurf boards with a plattform connected and a seat screwed on.
I reckon an outboard on the back would make this thing even more fun.
I think the best way to dispose windsurfing gear is to pas it on to a beginner (if it is still usable). While learning you dont need high performance gear anyway.

yer i agree backloop.
The best gear to learn on is big old heavy boards with an old triangle sail, 1 piece fiberglass mast and an aliminium boom. Mainly because this is the cheapest gear you can possibly get and its all you need to get a taste of the sport before you start spending more moeny.
Some of those old boards are the most stable things i ever stood on. its what my family and mates learnt on and it still sits up in the rafters waiting for when we know someone els who wantes to learn.
I also sold my old board (bombora 320 i reckon) with some older gear to a mate, and his getting along fine. He was happy not spending much money and it will last him fora while yet.

Awesome suggestions guys... I love the kids surfing in the trees - Dope!! Keep em coming!
Of all the ideas I keep coming back to just a simple one... I seem to see kids playing on boards all the time...
I wonder if a tight neoprene skin around a board (think laptop sleeve) with a soft nose and tail bumper would turn an ugly, dirty and possibly dinged board into a safe, multipurpose, and colourful board for kids or anyone to play around on - maybe even to kayak if it had a slick bottom...
One of the advantages is that people could buy the sleeve and install it themselves - no collection neccessary...
Let me know what you think!
