I would love to add the Duotone S Pace 5.4 to my quiver. To my disappointment the only mast that Duotone has available for this sail is a 400cm SDM Platinum mast. They don't make Gold or Silver SDM versions in that size. Maybe to your surprise, I am not inclined to buy a top-end mast for use in a single sail.
Has anyone used this sail with an alternative mast by another manufacturer? Which mast was it, and did it function properly? I would love having your input!
I'm using a Powerex 430 on my 6.2 and was using a chinook on my 7.4 Duotone. I found a good deal on a Duotone 460 mast and switched the 7.4 to it but saw no noticeable difference.
Thanks to everyone for their input!
The reason for asking is that I have also S Paces in the size 7.3 and 8.3SQM. I intended to use them with a Simmer Style 460cm SDM mast. Unfortunately rotation was poor. The learning point in this was that the Duotone 460cm mast are drop shape. I had to buy another (Duotone) mast.
Only later i learned that a friend had the same issues with his Warps. Since Duotone cambered sails are so sensitive to the mast I would be happy to have feedback from an S Pace 5.4SQM owner. Anyone?
Borrow a rdm mast and i bet it will rotate just great.
I just try different masts on sails and whichever has the best rotation i go with
Only ever used the recommended mast on one SDM sail in more than 30 years of sailing.
Don't the SPace sails have the adjustable camm preload at the mast for different mast diameters ?
Indeed, they do. The more I was surprised that I did not manage to get the larger sizes working with the Simmer mast. The middle camber always had to be pushed manually to get it to the other side.

Peter,
Have you tried sanding the back end of the adjustable cam to get more adjustment. I had to do this when using a KA mast with my 2020 Warp 7.7 sail. The sail now rotates beautifully.
Hi John,
I was not brave enough to sand the cambers on a brand new S Pace. The easiest way to solve the problem then was buying a Duotone mast. It works perfectly, but came at an expense.
As said, this time around I want to avoid the same situation by doing my homework prior to buying the sail. I would be happy to know if anyone is satisfied with the combination of a non Duotone mast with a 5.4 S Pace.
Brgds,
P.

I was using a 9.2 S pace with a NP mast. The camms rotated smooth as silk.

It's your call, but the cheapest way is to modify the cam to fit the curve of the mast you have. I sanded over 5mm off the back of two of my cams with no I'll effect to their operation.
