The only time I've seen windsurfers sailing together is at the start line of a race. All the other times, you're going flat out at your own speed, in your own direction. I saw a video once of two team riders both duck gybing around the same mark, and Peter Hart does it with two other windsurfers in "Turn for the better".
Has anyone here ever sailed with the aim of staying close to another person? Anyone want to give it a go?
(Have to give me a bit of room when it comes to turning around though...)
yeah done it heaps with my old windsurfing buddy, you can nearly sit on the board!
then as you get close to turn you just seperate by a few metres, say 4 metres, nod to each other and let rip!
Ive done a few runs close with Shaun out in the ocean as well, bit more gap because of the chop, but witihn 2 metres of each other, its pretty dang cool!
I actually find hooning back and forth on my own somewhat boring after a while and really enjoy the company of others. Windsurfing seems to be a somewhat solo sport though.
Also have a mate with a kite, who I like to chase down and shove the nose of my board up his you know what, always makes him smile, but then most teabaggers are gay hey
Must admit Ive thought of the same thing as well - in the past have done a bit of light aerobatics; but have always thought it unreal how some of these flyers like the American - "Blue Angels" or our "Roulettes" fly wing tip to wing tip doing various aerobatic manoeuvres in formation. This got me thinking how windsurfing in a way is quite similar - we can maintain relatively high speeds at times, albeit ours is over water, both are very manouverable craft, and both use "wings" as their form of propulsion. Ive sort of daydreamed of how 3-4 or even more windsurfers could look going flat out, feet from each other and then carving with perfect symmetry and timing relatively close to the beach - I reckon it could look pretty darn good. Add to that some head on head passes - with boards doing 50+km/h - thats a closing speed over water of 100 km/h plus!! I even think that some of their airborne aerobatic formations could be adapted to water. I have been a little guilty of sneaking up behind the odd person at speed; for one to see if they were interested in a bit of a race but also because it feels darn good to be in close proximity to another windsurfer at speed!
We used to do duck gybes following each other reall really close. Untill my mate fell off in front of me and I drove the nose of me wave board right into the back of his ribs. Lucky he had a harness protecting him...I thought I killed the poor bugga.
