Never windsurfed before but I want to pick one up to learn on. Im 6'1" 230.

Found these locally http://www.ksl.com/?nid=231&cat=197&pid=0 for cheap. There should be four near the top. Would any of these work for a newb? Or am I better off investing in something different. What model would you recommend?

6'1" and 230 kg or 230 lb

We generally talk in metric (eg. 186 cm and 105 kg)

Mineral- sorry mate I just registered. Don't want to troll.

105kg 186cm Sorry again (good start huh?.) That was disrespectful.

Really wish we would move forward with the rest of the world already.

Hmmm you say your USA but chuck in a "mate" word
Anyway a board that has around the 140-160 lt size will suit you.
Don’t go large sail first up, stick to around the 5's you will get sick of up-hauling real fast.
Best bet get lessons, it will save you a lot of puss and drama in the end.

Pat

Get yourself a lesson... This is always the best bet for a newb... Then you can work out what sort of beginner-intermediate board and what sails you need. Also, you will save a bunch of $$

Hey Mineral, slow down on the posts, your total is catching mine quick At this rate you'll be at before me

Pugwash- No-go on the lesson until Dec. (Hawaii) I was hoping I could get the basics down here (land-locked no lessons). I have surfed and Snowboard/skateboard regularly, hopefully helpful experience.

Mind explaining the "Pat Malone" thing?

Also, any of these stand out as being better that the other?

Don't know any of those boards If you REALLY wanna practice, buy a rig, practice rigging and de-rigging and handling the sail on land... Might get the feel for the sail, board might be second nature then

I was hoping one was better than the other. Ill go look at them tomorrow. They are only asking between 30-50$ U.S. (sorry) for the "Board, Sail, Mast, Boom, Daggerboard, and Tail fin". They are selling four different setups. Not much of a risk. Not sure the seller know what they have.

Hi Malone,

Don't rush into buying one of those old clunkers, do some homework first. Also, get at least one lesson -- this will show you how to uphaul, steer, turn around, and set the kit up.

I learnt on something quite similar, they are very forgiving and easy to learn on. If you're after the cheapest way to get windsurfing then you've just found it.

However, make absolutely certain that what you buy contains all the parts needed to get windsurfing. This includes: board, mast, sail, boom, mast extension, unijoint, fin, and daggerboard (if necessary). If any of these parts are missing, then they will probably cost more than you paid for the rest of the kit, if you can get them at all!

Also bear in mind that after 6 months or so you will be looking to upgrade, and will have to buy all new kit. But $50 is a cheap investment to see if you like the sport or not

Nebs,

This guy isn't for real. We've had too many landlocked Americans finding their way onto this site.

Not sure if I was going to learn to windsurf in Australia I would look on a North American Website.

We could turn this into a game. See how long it takes us to find him out.

I won this one! AND the woman looking for sail cloth for her kids!

Grinchy,

I wouldn't be too certain about your conclusion. What's to say they haven't just googled "Windsurfing forum" and come up with this one?

Hmmm... hang on... has surfed and snowboarded before... ARGH!!

That is the trouble with that nutcase, as soon as he makes an appearance suddenly you start questioning everyone... even the old-timers... even people who claim to be from WA... even people whose initials are T.G... and whose first name is "THE"...

P.S. You might want to check this one out:

Hey Pat

What have you got to say about this I too suspected you were the troll

I am also interested how far and how long the real troll is prepared to go I suspect the real troll is suffering from one or all of the following: multiple personality disorder, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, attention deficit disorder or just plain old amnesia

Cheers

It's all a bit sad isn't it!
Has any body tried logging on to google US and doing a search for windsurfing forums????
I just had a go but ended up with an "AU" search anyway, seabreeze at the top.

Another thing about newby advice, why does everybody assume they'll be uphauling?????
Learning to waterstart first is much quicker!

Cos I did it oright, and I don't want anybody else to get away with not having to face the long tiring process of sore back muscles, tin fruited after a session and sore hands from heaving on that up-haul rope..
They all need to suffer a bit like I had too

Had to do one the other week back when I ran out of squashed air couldn't believe I did that for a year before Isaac at S/bay showed me how to water start in 10 minutes (I am not very bright, but I can lift heavy fings)

Thanks for having some faith, that is exactly what I did. I looked at other forums but there were very few American sites and all looked no good.

Thanks for those who tried to actually help.

?-Don't you have to post spam to be a spammer? Start fights to be a troll?

Honestly I just thought you guys would be willing to help. Aussies in my experiences have been very friendly.

I didn't know it but with you guys I am "Pat Malone".

Ok so... I understand that for somethings lessons are a must. (I do instruct snowboarding, with 2 aussies and a kiwi none the less).

I don't have any ocean action where I am, but I do have amazing mountains with beautiful mountain lakes. I know some folks windsurf locally but there are very few and I don't know any.

I do however travel often and when I do there is nothing that can get me out of the ocean where available. I am going to either Florida (usa) or Aruba in mid Oct. Should get a chance for lessons there. Also going to be in Hawaii at the end of Dec. Same opportunity there.

-Should I wait for a lesson and then buy some legit equipment? Is it even worth owning high end equipment in my part of the world? Based on the link is one junker better for me than the others?

I consider myself as a "Board Rider" I try to ride it all. Hopefully a windsurf board will be the next I find myself standing on.

At that price I could buy two and bring a buddy along. Misery loves company.

-Cheers

Hey Malone,

Those junkers are all pretty much the same based on the descriptions, but you can't tell from the description if they have all the bits needed.

As I said, make sure that whatever you buy, it has absolutely everything needed to get sailing. Ask the seller to rig it up before you pull out your wallet as well.

Choose the gear which isn't going to destroy your back or your cars suspension.

Ye old old gear is heavy and only really suited for light wind.

If you haven't got instructors in your area look on the net for tutorials or books on "how to" windsurf, it involves a lot more pain and misery than lessons but can be done, I learnt from tutorials on the net but then again I'm a "dickhead" who likes(???) pain.

Lessons first, then gear... You and your buddy may find it all to much of a ball ache with all those bits and pieces to connect etc etc

yeah I agree with the 'what's uphauling' comment - what's the wind like there malone? if you can get away with it (I'd reckon you'd need about a consistent 18kts at least) I'd definately go a decent sinker board and learn to beach/water start straight away - being a snowboarder & surfer this shouldn't be too difficult. Give it a couple of weekends and you'll be away - beats drifting around on a plank for 6 months.
what with all the paranoia? I must have missed the devestation of previous trolls on this forum...
