HI all-

I need a new board for lake sailing in montana. we have small chop, pretty much flat water. I mostly sail a 6.2, but want it to go down to 5.2, overpowered. Here are my priorities

I am replacing an ancient, but well loved Seatrend World cup slalom. I want a modern board that hopefully is a bit easier to sail, or slog!

Easy planing (15>20 mph)
Good jibing (I consider the Seatrend to be fun to jibe, although it is hard to always plane out of)
Upwind easy
Slogs OK when the wind dies

I don't do tricks, and I don't try to go Mach 10. I've been looking at the Starboard Isonic 111. but at $2000, I figure I should check out everything.

Any ideas? I weigh 180. This will be my first new board, so I am pretty nervous, I don't know a lot about the gear available.

Thanks!
mr love

Isonic would be a good choice , with a 6.2 down the 101 maybe a better size . The 111 will take an 8.0 easy .
I have a 111 and I can plane in 12-13 knots with a 7.5 ,I,m 89 kg,s . I never use anything under a 6.6 on it ,22-25 knotsof wind max depending on the sea state .

Since I am lakewater (fresh water being less bouyant), perhaps the 111 would be good? What about the Tabou rocket 115?

Heya... Slogs OK might be a bit tricky. The only board I have ridden that slogs well is an old long board with a centre-board. If you are not interested in going flat out, check out the better freeride boards (Starboard Carve, JP X-cite ride), or if you are after something a little more speedy try a super-cross board. They may slog a little better than a dedicated race board.

5.2 is pretty small. Have you considered TWO fairly new (but secondhand) modern boards (say around 2005). Should be about the samne $$ as 1 new board. 180 lb is like 80 kg in our language right? And 15-20 mph is 13-17+ knots. I'd suggest 90 litres and 120 litres - will have you covered for a lot more conditions 90 litres will be a lot better in 5.2 conditions, but still give you enough buoyancy to slog home if the wind dies...

I want to go flat out, but don't need to be a speed demon. Our wind is pretty gusty, so I want to be able to get up on a plane and easily stay there even if it drops a notch. Slogging is to just be able to stay up when it drops back a level, and just meander home. My seatrend is a beast to slog, but it is only 90 L. I'm not looking for a center fin board, way past that. I don't uphaul, so it doesn't need to have volume for that.

I have an old Mistral ecstacy that I drop too when overpowered on the 5.2, so this board would really be for 6.2.

So, isonic, rocket, something else? Size 111, 115 ish?

Flat out but not a speed demon Are your sails race sails Are you intending on using deidated race fins If yes to both, a dedicated race board is the answer - like the Isonic... If no to both, consider freerace and super-cross. If you are not using race sails and fins, I don't think you'll find much difference in the speed you will achieve on freerace and super-cross vs race.

If one board only, 110-115l is about right in the conditions you describe. You may find a 5.2 a little small on said board.

Heck, I don't know. I don't think so. I used to sail a 6.3 Rush wind, cambered sail. Just got a 6.2 Loft Lip Wave last year. Only sailed it once. since I don't go for Mach 10, I'd say no, not full on race. So I think I'll check into free race and super cross, whatever those boards are. Sounds like the Tabou rocket might be along those lines?

Super-cross board sounds like the go... Also have a look at JP free-style wave boards. These have quite a flat bottom and are pretty quick.

All in all, sounds like dedicated race/slalom boards are not really what you are looking for...

Get a 115L Starboard S-Type. It will do everything you want it to do and more.

Thats my 2 cents
