I have been sailing at lucky bay on the river recently, and have been spinning out a lot. It is happening just before I hit my fastest speed which I find odd and also after I get a little jump of the chop. Before I could normally recover but recently it has been getting difficult with the board going long ways, with the wind rather than the traditional nose going with the wind, I don’t know if I should be looking at getting a bigger fin, or its just bad luck.
Any tips on how I could avoid this happening would be great,
Im on a starboard CARVE 111, I weight 75kg, my sails I use are 4.8, 5.0, and my most used is 5.4, with my fin being a 28cm free ride

Try sailing with less weight on your back foot. If you are pushing to hard on the fin it can cause spin out. Also check that you have not damaged your fin. Any rough spot on the leading edge can cause ventilation or spin out. Give a rough spot a light sand.

Spin out is usually bad technique rather than equipment based.

Hi Jord070,

Try moving your harness lines back a bit. If they are too far forwards, you need to pull hard with your back hand, and to balance this pull, you push with your back foot. Which means you spinout quicker.

It sounds a bit weird, but it's well worth a try.

Most probably not bad luck...

Technique = possibly.

Kit = maybe. Your fin does seem a little on the small side for 111 l, but your sails are small also. Get a mate to take it for a spin (no pun) and see if they have the same trouble. Mast track position might be something else you might like to look at... With a mentioned combos and small fin, mast track further back would be the go.

Sailing Location = definately the problem, too many jellyfish... Jellyfish always lead to downwind spin-out. Sail somewhere else OK OK, just jokes, don't anyone go getting offended or anything!!!

I find Largactil is great for stopping spinning out

Comrades
A little less vodka before sailing is helping of the big time for stopping of the spinning out for certain yar
OR more salted fish with the vodka he also working well for stopping this spinning out you mentioning
Comrade Jordo, this spinning out he is happening when you are very powered up yar ?
With small weight and big litre board, maybe it is time for you to be changing down to smaller board for sure yar... maybe litre of board 5 or 10 more than your kilo weight is better for you

I have often wondered what happens to the little darlings when I fang through a load of jellies on Lucky Bay. Maybe they just keep doubling up. The only time they cause me any grief however is when I get bit of one on the deck during a tack or gybe. Then it isn't the fin spinning out

I use a 32cm fin with my 105ltr Screamer down to 5.25m sails and I am your weight. Very rarely do I have spinout unless I am careless in the chop, or thump it at low power. Powering up the fin requires you to push against it with a steady pressure, so if you are powered up it should not cause you grief.

Maybe you are not as powered up as you think. 5.4m on Lucky Bay in recent weeks seems a little small apart from rare moments. I am normally out on a 7m and I am normally the small one around our group.

Anyway, hope this all provides a little more input for you and hope to see you down there when the wind gods are in a good mood.

thanks, i am spining out on the rare strong wind ocasions, like on tuesday, i have not been gettign the trouble on the bigger sail days, when im using my bigger fin. but i have been mucking around on the chop testing my skills, well i like to think they are skills. but it seems to me that it is hapening when im rocketing upwind, with the board flat(ish) .
thanks
