well its been a few months since ive started windsurfing im crusing along with confidence in the straps and in the harness(harness is still being worked out) poping little airs, water starts and now im trying the carving gybe which needs more attention but coming along nicely but im out of action with a sprained ankle from one of the attemps of a gybe anyway enough of that i was trying to figure out the numbers and letters on my gear... for example i wanted to know what does the stuff mean on the mast? mine says 460 IMCS 25
i just need some varification... also my boom is a 150-200??? what does this mean??? i can guess but wanted to know from the more expirenced thanks

460 = length

IMCS
Indexed Mast Check System. An internationally recognised method of calibrating
the stiffness and curve characteristics of windsurfing masts, based around the standard
length 465cm mast. Sail manufacturers will provide a recommended IMCS number which lets
you know exactly what stiffness and curve of mast best suits a particular sail.

Here's a webpage with some things to do with your mast while your ankle
is sprained

..and the "25" bit of your mast is the stiffness.

Common ones I've seen are 21,25 & 29.

21 is generally on wave sales and newer freeride sales - bendy!
25 is for slalom/race sales - moderate bend
29 is for big sales, and are stiff.

Match the stiffness to the recommendation of the sail, or it just won't work well.

Enjoy .. Laurie!

p.s. 150-200 is the boom length range in mm

cool thats clear to me
the boom range is in mm right?
i have numbers on my boom from 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and so on i cant remember how far it goes but 150-200 is that from the smallest setting to the most extended of the settings? i dont wont to say your wrong laurie (your awsome) but mm seems too small it seems like it extends way over 50 to 60cm ??? im i understanding you correctly???
sorry i know this is probably a stupid little petty thing to worry about but i really want to know for when i buy new gear next time as to get the right stuff to fit all together nice and snug :) thanks for your patience

Doh! my mistake, not mm .. cm! The 150-200cm is the range of sail widths it will hold. Some sails have the size of boom required written near the base. The idea of the 0,10,20 .. these are so you can re-configure the boom at the width next time.

When I was starting, everytime I rigged the sail I, had no idea, so rigged it completely different to the last time I rigged it - different downhaul, outhaul, boom .. no wonder I had trouble!

Once you get it rigged right, you should be able to easily rig it the same everytime (i.e. take note of the boom setting) .. and then you can make minor adjustments with your outhaul for more or less wind...

Enjoy .. Laurie!

(haha..thanks for your patience!)

Hi

THose measurements 0-5-10 are on the boom extension starting from the outside.
So, if you have it closed right up it is on 0, Therefore if the minimum travel of your boom is 150 then
as you pull it out it becomes 150 + 5 = 155, 150 + 10 = 160 etc etc.
Then if your sail says it needs 175 - you'd pull the boom out to 25 and it should
be right - then tinker as Laurie says.
