Hey Vic Seabreezers,
The wife and I are off on a road trip over Christmas (with the other thousands), from Sydney to Mornington Penisula via Gippsland Lakes, Wilsons Prom and Phillip Island.
Are there some good sailing/SUP spots in any of those stops that I should be checking out? I wave sail but have been known to sail in a lake as a last resort.
Any advice will be gratefully received!
Thanks
Ben
From my experiences (would love to hear other people's):
Mornington Peninsula:
- W/WSW: Mt Martha or Safety Beach
- SW: Mount Martha (only if not too much S)
- S/SE/E: not much good for anything (too much of a wind shadow cast by the land)
- NW/N/NE: Rye front beach
Wilsons Prom:
SW/S/SE/E: Shallow Inlet (Sandy Point side)
W/NW: Shallow Inlet (Yanakie side)
N/NE: Not so good.
The above is flat-water/slight chop (< 20 knots) to increased chop/some bump n jump (> 20 kn), not wave sailing. There is wave sailing to be had at Sandy Pt, but no idea what conditions suit.
Don't think you will sail wilsins prom but you must go great walking. You will need book tidal river tent or cabin. You must visit shallow inlet (flat water speed sailing) at sand point you must sail sandy point surf beach can be great. Interlock both inlet and ocean. Woolamai on Philip island but can be big surf worth the walk to headland along beach. Cat Bay but I think very off shore in summer get advice from other. Go around to balnarring , point Leo can be great, shoreham can be great surf these places all good for sup
thats it from me have fun
