Hi Guys, Me and the misses are considering going to Boracay, Philippines in January. Just wondering if anyone has been there and if they can give me any information about it? I kite (a lot) and we both like scuba diving too. I'd like to know things like: - What are the good kite spots? - What kite sizes to bring? - Any specific hotels/guesthouses we should stay at? - Anyone been diving there and is it any good? - Is there anything to do besides Kitesurfing? Like city visits or nice sites to see? - Nightlife? I would appreciate any information. Thanks!

I went there last March for 3 weeks. VERY VERY crowded. Lots of euros/learners kiting up & down the beach. Not really any flat water. Bump & jump ****.... Pretty cheap, very busy streets, & dirty. Make you you check out baggege for flying in. Not sure you can fly with much to Caticlan. I think you need to go to the bigger airport. Great nightlife, leave the missus & kids at home & head for Coco Mangas. Cheers

Hi Akwa. We stayed at 7 Stonesboracay which is right on the kite beach. Don't expect to kite with just a few Euro's as the place is packed in January. Take your 12m and 9m. The kite beach is at Bulabog beach while White Beach is where all the the night life and restaurants are located, just 5 minutes from Bulabog beach. Everything is cheap and plenty to do. Tours for fishing, snorkelling and sailing etc all reasonably priced. great holiday as can kite on one side of the island and do everything else on White Beach.

I have heard that it is not uncommon to have 100 + kites in a relatively small area. Doesn't sound like much fun to me.

I grew Up in Hong Kong and we frequently went to Boracay. I caught malaria there at 4 years old, apparently I am bloody lucky to be alive. Although this was before there was even electricity on the island. From being a kid all I really remember was white sand beaches and lots and lots of wind. We always used to stay at "fridays" resort. It was once the best on the Island but this is going back to 1992 last time I was there. I would love to go back. December and January would be the best time of year for kiting I would guess.

Hi January probably inst a great time to go to Boracay due to the crowds. There is usually a windsurf and kiteboard comp or two on. It is a good time for wind though. This link below says the Funboard Cup starts on the 22nd Jan for a week. Do a search and find out when this and other events are scheduled and try and arrive outside those times. The accomodation prices tend to be high at these times too because of the Euros.I havent stayed there but friends have and agree with mst of the comments above. Crowded, dirty and "pricey for asia" http://www.surfertoday.com/windsurfing/2808-boracay-funboard-cup-will-gather-kiteboarders-and-windsurfers-in-the-philippines

Thanks guys. Some good information here. Seems to have it's positive and negative points I see. I do like the fact that it seems like a place to party and go out but the dirty and busy waters part doesn't sounds very appealing really. Is it like a Thailand but harder to get to?

Of course, January and February is a good time to go there and surfing kites and wind. I had spent many a week at there in March but I think March is very crowds and this is a small place for kite surfing.

Boracay - if you get out before all the euros wake up and recover from their hangovers , (before 10am), then you can get a decent session in with not too many people. The wind comes in early and if the tide is right, the water is pretty flat. Just watch out for those sea urchins - plant your foot on one of those and you won't be riding for a day or two. If you are wanting to go to the Philippines, you do realise there are thousands of islands with absolutely bombing 25+ kts wind? Check out http://philippineskitesurfing.com Thats me on the bottom right. Cuyo is found in Palawan and is a little bit more elaborate to get to (mrs might not be keen), - but the hospitality is second to none, there are NO crowds anywhere, and there might be 1 or 2 other kites out in a fantastic bay - there are some waves further out too (wind swell but still rideable). Its not a party destination and you'll need to take cash with you - there are no banks or ATMs. PM me for more info on how to get there - there are a few tips and tricks you will need to know. Cheers

I was there last year for 2 weeks in Jan. Great nightlife. When it got crowed i headed over to Union Beach, was able to kite over there from Boracay around 10mins. Was prefect there, no crowds and huge lagoon. Ken a local guy has opened up a school there and when I was there I think they were building accommodation This was the school in Union http://www.freestyle-boracay.com/location-union.html
