My last 5 days of my 28 days at Sanur and i caught dengue fever.. not good fever/sweat/muscle pain/sharp headache..Mossie manage to get into my room at night.... SHOULD ALWAYS have have mosq repellent on ever at the hotel. Meet alot of ozzie kiters... new kiters doing lessons with kodak/komang... and many experience kiters from seabreeze.

I've been a regular traveller to Bali, as has my wife for the last ten years. Last time we were there my wife got Typhoid, sickest she's ever been and swears she'll never return Just shows you have to be careful even when you think it's safe.

... I got Ross River Fever (not in Bali but in Darwin) and lucky for me you can only get it once but you have the symptoms for life, so when ever you get sick, it turbo charges what ever you get. So when ever I get the flu I can legally say to the missus I have a man flu, much worse than she would have !! You don't wanna get Dengue Fever again thats for sure!!! cheers, Robbie

I found this out a few years ago after a mate got dengue in Bali, and a second attack can be life threatening, indoors is just as risky as outdoors. The tiger mosquito ( aka dengue mosquito) seems to be the main culprit for spreading dengue and what a lot of people don't know is that it likes to live inside. I just got back from Bali/sanur and used bushmans and sprayed inside accommodation. For future reference: The dengue mosquito (Aedes aegypti) can more readily be identified by its behaviour. Look for these signs: It likes to live indoors and bite people indoors It is hard to catch; it moves very quickly, darting back and forth It likes to hide under furniture and bite people around the feet and ankles Its bite is often relatively painless, so people may not notice they are being bitten or they may think they are being bitten by sandflies/biting midges. The adult mosquito prefers to rest in dark areas inside and under houses and buildings. Favourite resting spots are under beds, tables and chairs; in wardrobes and closets; on piles of dirty laundry and shoes; inside open containers; in dark and quiet rooms; and even on dark objects such as clothing or furniture. The dengue mosquito prefers to bite humans during daylight. It is very cautious when biting, flying away quickly at the slightest disturbance. An effective way to kill adult mosquitoes is to apply a residual insecticide (cockroach surface spray) onto the areas where they prefer to rest. Where does the dengue mosquito live? The dengue mosquito is sometimes dubbed the 'cockroach of mosquitoes' because it is truly domesticated and prefers to live in and around people's homes. It does NOT breed in swamps or drains, and does not often bite at night.

So how sick did you get?
Started with small migraine and starting get stronger..on the day 5, sharp headache every min, shivers, sweat, feel cold, joint/muscle pains lasted 1.5 days. i was too sick to walk around and i suspect malaria. The docs gave me pains killer/antiboitic... I was told is a mild dengue fever. Very similiar to strong melb flu infection without the running nose.

^^ the key words here are "mild dengue fever". I could barely move for about 3 days, walking was out of the question, but as others mention getting it a second time is the problem

sounds like Bali belly. Dengue isn't a 5 day thing. anyways with the amount of pooh that gets flushed out at sanur Im really not that suprised. Its still a third world country with malaria, dengue and rabies. Sorry to hear you spoiled your well earned holiday. If it is dengue then expect 6 to 12 months feeling like an aids sandwich.

Thanks for reminder.I was sitting in Bali hotel in transit when I read this and noticed the odd Mozzy was in room. Dusted them and will be more vigilant. Btw I recommend the Harris hotel in Tuban if you are in transit or need a room the night your plane leaves late. It's around $60. Free transport, wi-fi, clean and great service, < 5 min from airport..... Although the duck in the bebek goreng they served me was so skinny, I think it ran a marathon to get here. Maybe we just have a poultry obesity problem in Oz as well and I've forgotten what a decent bird looks like.
