... years ago I had a near collision with a 4m croc while windsurfing, close enough that it thrashed towards me and hissed. I hi-tail it back to shore and meet up with a mate who is learning to kite in the shallows. As I'm standing there telling him to watch out, I see a big black mass coming for us at speed and I sh!t myself. I take off running, thinking it was the croc, its gunna get us for sure. It was the shadow of the kite

One green thumb is just not enough for this one. Last season (distinguishable from this one by the presence of wind) I mistook a shark for my kites shadow. When I came in, Phil said 'did you see that big shark out there?' Soon as he said it I went weak in the knees, it was a huge f#@ker! and I had kited right past it. Probably better I didn't know, would probably have home delivered it's dinner.

Hey 'the gibbo', did you actually get chased?? Never heard of that. I past over a 10ft Bronzy on the weekend at Ceduna, but he didn't take much notice, came back over the same area on my way back to the beach but he was gone. Nice that my first sighting wasn't the shark we're famous for!!! (Largest GW caught right here)

... yep, teenager, 14. Funny thing, when he was learning about a year ago, he wouldn't go more than 5 or 10mtrs off the beach because he was too scared of crocs, sharks, stingers ect. Now I have to tell him off for going too far off shore. He got stung by box jelly recently, grunts and says "meh". Mind you, everything is "yeah,, what ever dude", but when mum talks he still sh!ts himself. (pssst, so do I, but don't her that) cheers, Robbie

it always scares the crap out of me at melville when a shadow from somebodies kite goes over me.. it's already happened twice in a month that someone crashed his kite on my head while i'm leisurely talking or (probably more likely) doing the walk of shame back up the beach haha

such a relief to read this thread. Feel more normal now that I get freaked out regularly by my kite shadow coming my way!

Box and goes meh...??? I am weak as piss (don't respond, I know the answer) or they breed them tougher your way. I have seen some nasty box stings over my years (yes, I'm not as young as I once was) and meh is an understatement....... We seem to lose lives every now and then from a box sting from some uneducated person going for a swim.

Found this on FB, didnt find proper source so IŽll give credits to Cimeron Morrissey who posted it. Now that would make the clear blue water in Maui abit more brownich.

Today i was kiting in dampier with a mate who is only learning. I was doing runs passed him as he was in the water with his kite down, yelling advise on how to relaunch the piece of **** M-80 and saw a dorsal fin swim right passed him. It was a 1.5meter hammerhead.I yelled out ''big shark,I'm not ****ing around get out''. My mate wasn't fussed at all. I pointed downwind and got out straight away! Massive dorsal fin on a reasonably small shark. Don't think i will kite at sunset anymore.

I'm not a marine biologists' dolphin sandwich but don't whales have the horizontal tale and sharks verticle? So 'ol mate in this picture is whale watching?
