Im guessing the guy half way up the mast is scared of water or cant swim?? 
I'm guessing he is acting as a counter weight to try to get the keel off the reef.

The guy (Nobbs} was up the mast to secure a rope which was towed by a second vessel. This held the keel over & off the reef while the first boat towed the yatch off. Very little damage in the end, bent rudder post caused when the yatch went up!
