Are there times when you're better off riding a wave in your un-natural position rather than just always being in your natural position? I've heard people say you should be able to surf goofy and regular while kiteing, but I'm curious why.

I started trying this the other day, those waves that were just out of reach were now within reach on my heelside. I found I got more leverage than on my toeside. although unhooking or a dynabar style setup would reduce the need for this. I like to try to be mirrored with my riding, but with a surfy, having surfed half of my life it feels weird, old habits are hard to break.

How many people can surf both ways. Not many. As a sailboarder you're forced to surf with either foot back so you develop that skill. And yes, it would be valuable to maintain it. But everyone has a preference & if you don't make a concerted effort to practice both then you're soon heavily biased one way, & that's usually the end of it. Col

I'm new to kitesurfing so that's why I asked the question, but having surfed regular foot all my life I can't imagine surfing goofy foot. It sounds like it may not be necessary.

its not 'necessary' or essential, just opens up more options if you can master it.
