Hello! New kid on the block. I'm moving to Sydney and am looking for a nice area to live - preferably near a few decent kite spots! [}:)] Something not to far away from town (+/- 20 miles) so that I can get into work without a 2 hour commute. Some decent schools nearby would be nice too :) Are there any particular areas that you'd recommend?

I'll be there in 2 weeks time for a month to find a place and organise everything before moving the family over.

Any advice gratefully received!

i now live in canada, but know sydney well. both northern beach suburbs you mention are great places to live! the main place to kite around there is narabeen/colloroy in the surf, so you dont need to go as far as newport to live, although newport, avalon, whale and palm beach are the best places up there (albeit much more $$). peak hour on this route sucks balls. manly is another good option north of the city. the great thing about manly is that its like a medium sized coastal town, only a short ferry ride or drive to the city.
your other good option to kite is botany bay, just south of the city. much closer to the city than narabeen, but def not as nice to live. if you're not against living closer to the hustle and bustle, look at bronte or coogee.
i dont know about kite rental, so do a search and ask the kite shops/schools around the sydney area.

I am moving to Sydney in early November and will be looking for as much kiting as possible, my only other real criteria is a decent commute into darling harbour for work.

If anyone else has any suggestions as to where to look or is just generally willing to take a pom under their wing and show them round the local spots that would be greatly appreciated!!

Good feedback, sorry it took me a while to get back! Been busy. I'm in Sydney, got here 2 weeks ago, and have 2 weeks to go. Got my contract offer and it looks good, so will be moving the family out in a few months time. Exciting!

I've looked at Manly, and really like it. Expensive though. Am checking out the area between Manly and Curl Curl, maybe Balgowlah. Also checked out Rose bay - same thing (too expensive). I dont want to commute longer than 45min - an hour tops.

@EnglishCraig: my offices are in Darling harbour area, too. Beginning of Market street.

Went sailing today (ASX Regatta). Nice nice. Wind this weekend so trying to rent some kite gear, hoping kitepower.com.au rent out kit...

Have you also looked at Dee Why? Close to Narrabeen/ Long Reef etc.

Newport is nice. Probably about as far north as you wanna go really and still have a reasonable commute.

Looking at Deewhy today, and surrounding neighbourhoods.

Then kiting (sunday) 10AM-2PM in Botany Bay, using some demo equipment from KP.

Hey guys, Thanks for all the responses. I have been accepted to UNSW and will be attending late February! What kind of wind range should I expect from February- June? I weigh about 73 kg and I'm thinking of bringing a 9m and 12m. What do you guys think?

I'm about to buy new kites, figure I'd be better off buying in the Uk than in AUS (I move over to Sydney end of Feb). I was planning on getting an 8m and 11m Rebel but that is based on local conditions (it blows 15 - 30knts Westerlies here in Brighton UK, often!).

By the sounds of it Sydney is not blessed with as much wind... I'm 92kilo and ride Shinn Pro 138cm twintip - any advice? I'm thinking maybe I should go for a 9m and a 13m instead...

I'll be buying a surfboard as well. Not sure what yet, was going to post a thread asking for some advice. If I was staying in UK I'd get an F One Fish (sloppy waves, side onshore winds). I'm pretty new here too, but I think you would be better seved with a 9/13 combination...

The 13m will provide far more sheltered square meterage to keep you dry in THIS F*$@!#K ABSOLUTE $H!@ SUMMER "SUNSHINE"!!!!!

Well, that puts a downer on my excitement for moving to Sydney. I'll size up to 13m but tbh if it's not blowing 15+ then it's not a lot of fun anyway... I'm done with 16m kites, man. Gave my 06 Rhino to a bedouinne kid in Morocco last year . That thing was a TANK!

I'm bringing my KTM for the windless days. Sounds like I'll be riding more than kiting!

Only fair to update and say there was a decent bit of wind yesterday afternoon - well powered on a 13 - nice to get back on the water!

I'll be driving up and down the coast regularly, looking for wind and quiet beaches. Will take you up on the offer of more info nearer the time - will need a few weeks to settle the family in etc.
