I'm heading to the OldBar for what I hoped would be a non-stop action kitesurfing weekend - unfortunately the forecast looks C**p all weekend but on the off-chance it improves has anyone got any advice re the spot?

I have seen the launching permitted map already so more looking for any tips, as to when its best where, any particular issues - submerged things / rips etc.

Any advice appreciated

Old bar is pretty straightforward in my experience.
Lots of shallow water, plenty of mud, and some sweet smooth sailing.
No real off shore concerns as pretty much everywhere you might get blown to allows you to stand up. Breeze from the south can be a bit flukey after it hits the land mass, but anything with a bit of east in it should be sweet sailing.
Currents are minimal concern unless winds are really light on a out going tide, in which case you just have to be aware but plenty of room to get ashore before you get anywhere near the river mouth.
It's only about a 10 second run before you have to turn around if going across from one side to the other on an angle at anything but the highest tide...so heaps of practice in turning transitions.
I hope this helps - enjoy!

Try the sailing club in forster, its in between forster and pacific palms on the way out of town.
Need assist landing as there is no beach but great spot with the right wind.
But old bar is still a way better spot, dont waste your time trying to set up on that little grass patch unless you want holes in your kite and or have it stuck in trees. set up on the beach side on the sand!

grass that puts holes in your kite?! sounds savage!!

Looks like what little wind there is will be easterly so at least thats one thing!

thanks for the comments guys - always good to know what to expect!

Its not your typical grass, its very rough thick grass with lots of little sticks everywhere,

If you turn left at the caravan park and drive through the "s" bends there is a car park on the second right which you can park a normal car, if you have a 4 wd you can take that entry onto the beach.
OR if you want to set up on the grass area, instead of parking in the car park you keep driving for about another 300m and you will see the set up area down a steep embankment

Watch out for thieves, have had the windows smashed and car broken into twice at Muddies, Old Bar. Parking over the beach side of the lagoon better but you will need a permit from the council availabloe at tourist info centre at Taree or Forster.
After the recent rain and ** wind you might re - think the cost of the trip and put it towards a better one.

Good luck

cheers mate - i did park there and thankfully no issues - I can see the potential of the spot but no wind , torrential rain, thunderstorm and no power...... plus and 8 hour drive for a weekend ---- it might be a while before i return!
