So I tried my first backroll today down at dolls.

Didn't go so well. Turns out you need to keep your hands very centred in the bar or else you end up doing an enormous kiteloop to back slap fully powered up about 2 stories high.

Hilarity ensues for those standing on the beach. Bells ringing, stars in my eyes, back to the drawing board (youtube videos).

oooh **** that hahaha... i tried my first kitelooped(intentional) backrolls yesterday as well.

Biggest hint when learning the backloop (from someone who only learnt them 2 months ago) is not to use the kite at the start, focus on your popping technique if you haven't got that down yet. If you have that down, all you have to do is the same thing as a pop, except dont push off your edge, continue it around and complete what really is half a rotation land pointed downwind... and try them at around HALF or a bit more speed first before trying sent/fullspeed.

Don't do a complete backroll. The kite will rotate you as it loops, just sort of do a "half" rotation and let the kite do the rest.

I am learning them atm too. I haven't managed to kiteloop it but I have come close!

I watched the progression dvd and they show you everything you need to know. Keeping your hands in the middle of the bar and pretty much parking the kite at 12 before you 'pop' is cruitial when your attempting your first backloop.
At the start I also kept confusing which hand is holding the leading side of the bar as the crossed lines confuse me, you've just got pull with the leading hand without looking at it to get the kite powered up after you've spotted your landing.

I've seen lots of riders just boosting airs (no rotations, just hanging there), would these jumps come before or after the backroll progression? Which one is harder to do?

The last thing you want to do if learning backrolls is to loop the kite.
If you have trouble powering out of your landing, try and not park the kite at 12 and keep it at 1 (if going right) and try to push off with your back foot when leaving the water. Remember, your body will follow what your head does, so make sure to look over your front shoulder.
In regard to jumping and just "hanging there", this would normally come before backrolls for most people. Not everyone loves air though, so whatever feels good and is working for you

Full credit to all of you........ most kiters are super soft you rarely see people eat $hit anymore.
A mate of mine has only just started looping and the entertainment value is unparalleled.

Can I just break the rest of your fingers instead? That way the wind will be great for the next 22.5 weeks! I'm sorry but someone has to be our sacrificial lamb to the wind gods.

I'll do you a deal, if you pay for the beer I will have to drink during the recovery we might be able to work something out.
Please keep in mind I can drink a ****load of beer and you will need to send it in up front.

Spot on - keep your hands close together, get the kite flying straight, minimise input on the kite and use your board / chop to get the pop going.

If you remember nothing else when learning backrolls, keep in mind how funny the crashes look to everyone else... [}:)]
