just got my hands on a 2010 5'8 celeritus. I rode a proto of Ben Wilsons about 18 months ago and thought it actually looked pretty different and i was abit unsure how it would go. then i rode it and it blew my mind. Then i found out they they weren't going into production for some time and not ready til 2010, so i had a custom one shaped the same and thats all i have been riding for the last year or more waiting for the board to come out.
it is a similar outline as the 6'2 slingshot board but they have chopped a few inches off the tail and given it a wide tail with a slight diamond shape and a few inches off the nose and tucked the nose in to maintain volume . its not a fish by any means. same thickness and width as a standard 6'2 or 6'3 surfboard.
its the funnest little board i have ever ridden in and is still great when the swell picks up to. because of its length it fits into the pocket alot easier and turns alot tighter but it also turns like a bigger board if you want to draw your turns out more due to the outline. also a great board for airs. graphics are sweet. construction is really good. they are epoxy so should withstand abit of abuse. comes with great tail pad and really nice straps for those wanting to strap it up. if you are looking for a new board then these little puppies are definately worth a look. if you get a chance demo one and you will be impressed. i think they will work well for the majority of riders out there and due to small size will make it easier to handle for riders wanting to try more unstrapped riding. i will post a couple of photos of the board in the next day or so. |

Ryland,
thank you for the review, could you answer these few questions:
1) do you think this board will handle chop well or does it get bouncy easily?
2) how does this board differ from the fish type?
3) structure: I have been reading (from this forum as well) that 2009 surfboards were very fragile, have SS changed the structure for 2010?
Thank you very much!!! |

mate as far as im aware i've not heard of any problems with the 09 ss boards. i put my boards through hell and have been riding the 6'2 wilson pro also and its holding up great. no boards are indestructable and most top brands would have similar constructions to each other i would have thought.
i think the 5'8 handles chop great if you see one in a shop lay it over a 6'2 board and look at the outline difference. its very minimal and as far as the foam that has been removed from a bigger board to make this board it is hardly anything.i would describe it as a really fun version of a 6'2 outline that has benefits a 6'2 as far as drive and float goes and the length benefits of a 5'8. it is such a fun board to ride and i think these boards will be very popular once people ride them and see their benefits in kiting.
a fish type board is alot wider. most fishes are around this size and up to about 6 foot but are around 20inches wide where the 5'8 is about 18.5 inches wide. which makes a huge difference to the feel. a fish is alot more looser and skatier where the 5'8 has the same rail outline as a 6'2 standard board. i'm 90 kgs and i can paddle the 5'8 quite easily. as it feels alot bigger than it actually is. does that make sense. |

Had my 5'8 for a week now and it's amazing... I mostly ride in choppy/mushy waves and I just got it to have fun on. It's so much fun that I havn't ridden anything else all week!!!!!!!
Rockets upwind, super controlled, niiiiiiiice fins (luckily due to the mini-tuttle box) and it's super light weight... Straps that come with it are great (the new 2010 lace up straps) but I don't like strapped riding... Slingshot were right when they said this thing is fast - It's soooo weird to be overtaking twintips when you're strapless!!!
Here's a few pictures, such a sexy board!!!

Lol,
Had mine out yesterday in waist/shoulder high messy crap on the Sunny Coast... It's sooooooo fast, loose and easy to ride in choppy lumpy crazy waves - Love it :) Best money i've ever spent!!! Yes that's right, I actually bought something rather than mooch off the demo gear |

Quick query to any lucky owner of one of these bad boys - in the attached pics the front foot strap position looks really close to the nose of the board i.e. a really wide stance? Could just be because its a short board but thought I'd ask as I'd probably use straps and think wide-spread-legs feels a bit naff!

Yeah, it looks wide, and I thought it was wide when I first jumped on the board..
But now when I ride strapless, I find that my front foot is smack bang between the inserts where a strap would be. Same with the back foot - so it's a great position - Slingshot really did the research to get it right...
Can't wait for Mambo!! |

| nah stance is normal. strap position is 26,27 or 28 inch stance . same as all other slingy boards and a pretty common stance among most other brands too. |
