What type of homework do you do on the starting line?

I would assume same as dinghy racing e.g. figure out lay-lines, first shifts etc.

I got myself one of those countdown egg timers from DickSmith $20 and so hopefully can hit the staring line at full speed at the right time.

My strateg is to do a couple of runs towards the start line and work out where I need to be approx 10 seconds prior to the start. Of course this depends on where the rest of the field are which may or may not upset the best laid plans!

firstly.... be fast! If you are not at top speed you will quickly be passed by lots.
second.... be on time.

Clear air is a gold mine, just as in yacht racing.

Local rules will somewhat dictate your start methods.

Ben's ten golden rules of sailing

1.Get a good start (do 10min of homework)

2. Have a plan for the race. (What is the wind doing? Observations)

3. Be FAST! ( rig tuning)

4. Watch- a. the wind, b. the next shift, c. your position relative to the competition and the course at all times.

5. Sail smoothly with what you have. (light winds). You can't change the wind but you can change your sails.

6. Keep doing the right thing. Sail the % game.

7. Know the racing rules inside out.

8. NEVER, NEVER GIVE UP. It's a sailing race and anything can change at any time.

9. Cross the competition when you can. (windward)

10. Ask questions all the time.

I followed these rules during the regatta in addition to basic yacht handling training, yacht preparation, tactical and material support.
