here tis more info.........

A proposal for a road trip to Landyachting Australia's roots Lake Lefroy WA
.and then, The Eighty Mile Beach, then return home exhausted. Around 34 days

Paul, Susan, The Mini Stigg, TP1 and other helpful people put on a great weekend of practical Landyachting on their legendary local patch Lake Lefroy, every year.

It could be time for some wise people from the east [W.A. people call us that] organized a trip across The Paddock [Nullabour Plain] to help them “enjoy&energize”.

So I have taken the time to put this proposal forward for considerations……..

Firstly a declaration………I have crossed the paddock many times in my life, many more than 40, starting when the road was mostly dirt [early 60's] Government surveys, express freight, tourist coaches [accommodated & camping], private motorist,
I have flown it at least 6 times, and railed it twice. Surprisingly I haven't crossed for the last 20 years, I have settled. Every trip is different and I have never found it boring. There is plenty to see and experience. This will be my last……most likely

Also I am on the waiting list for a total [R.H.] shoulder replacement which I hope will be dealt with and recovered by August. This would have to be, to allow this trip in this year. Other that, I would have to put the trip off until next year 2013. I will be pushing for 2012. I already have one [LH] and most of the bone material [RH] is missing, hence the need for another. Not a problem.

I have room for three other persons on a camping style excursion, with a strong trailer
That would have no troubles carrying my yacht and three others, packed well. Probable cost per person each way $A400.00 donation…..interested PM me.

With built in safety precautions I possibly would be able to transport a couple of unaccompanied yachts across for those who may not have as much time as I and could afford to fly across to Kalgoolie for the weekend. This we could work out for those interested by PM. Possible cost …unaccompanied landyacht return $A200.00

The above would be from my place [70ks nth of Adelaide]. You supply tie downs and packaging and help load to your satisfaction.

I will post more detail soon, with an appendage…… that will cover another trip while in Western Australia. This being an expedition of Land yachters to sail the length of what is commonly called The Eighty Mile beach [which is around 240ks sailable]. To carry on from The Lake Lefroy weekend. Need some adventure? Keep watching the posts and form your own opinion. Someone has to do it… . soon!. CHALLENGE

NOTE…for miles people….!00 kilometers = 60 miles so 3733ks
200 =120miles
300 =180miles
400 =240miles
500 =300miles
1000 =600miles about 2000miles
Now some decisions depending on what is available to our band.
I have allotted the next week for landyacht activities till Sunday 14th

Then head home arriving around or before Friday 26th about 34 days,
Tons of fun, some hardship, maybe 8400 odd ks and maybe even some would continue to Broome and do the big circuit…not me ……

Just a note if someone wishes to fly in from overseas, I think somehow we could get a yacht set up for them be it Kalgoolie[Lake Lefroy] or Port Headland or both….so give it some thought……..

still more......
Have a “Goggle Earth at this”

Fly to > Port Headland West Australia > follow Highway 1 north > cross The DeGray River, [excellent camping area] > continue to Pardoo Road House then turn left > 11ks to
Cape Kerrauden [there are a couple of spellings used] This is a fishing and camping area at the southern edge of The Eighty Mile Beach.
A permanent ranger is in residence under the control of The East Pilbara Shire [ goggle their internet site]. I worked for them on a contractors grader for about 8 mths doing road maintenance, they were a good mob to work with.
The cape got going with people from the then local mines, iron ore, Shay Gap & Goldsworthy having their own recreational area. I had a couple of years at Shay Gap in bits and pieces.
Bottom mark [south] Cape Kerrerden 19,58,16, 26 S….191, 47, 42, 85 E
Middle mark…….Wallal Downs sheep station and 80 mile beach caravan park
19,45,15,71 S……..120,40,21,12, E
Top Mark [north] just below Cape Jurbert 18,57,55,59 S……121,33,59,69 E
In total there seems to be about 240ks of useable beach that sometimes has some clousures by CALM or DEP when Turtles are hatching or other significant wildlife thingos are happening.
The beach is drivable to 4X4 although it is not recommended or encouraged, there have been quite a few 4X4s caught in soft patches and claimed forever by the sea.
The beach can be up to 4km from water edge to high tide mark. You are in a very large tidal flow area
There is an access rd/track parallel to the beach and the old coastal highway is also there, now station and public access roads.
Along the beach there are about 8 creek or river outflows that would have to be negotiated, it is very clear water and hard to judge the depth from goggle earth.
These outflows are great fishing, I have caught shark by hand in younger days. Along the beach there were some very big permanent fish traps that Wallal downs used for year. Early days at Wallal they used to barge their wool bales out to the clippers off shore and send direct to the wool markets of England.
I have on order the approved survey maps 6 @ 100.000 and three specials covering Headland to Broome, for greater detail. More on that in later posts
There is little cover it is mostly costal sand dunes with a bit of vegetation but few shade trees. You can goggle Eighty Mile Beach Cavaran Park for some personal endorsements.
You may find that your mobile phone company has no or little contact in this area.

have you considered a time table along the lines of
day 1 leave 4am drive to ceduna
day 2 4am drive to lefroy
would be a bit more attractive to prospective co drivers

Much as I hate to cut a good road-trip short, I'd also say it would be easier to find prospective travel companions if the trip were shortened (says me who allows a day to drive only 350km ).

I personally can't dedicate the time/money this year, but best of luck to those that might Considering the price of airfares, this looks like a good deal. Good luck with it!!!
