Just had a little thought; I wonder if there is a reason why batterns are at the angles they are. i've seen many images of promo class 5's with batterns (fully sheeted in) angled downwards towards the rear, others with horizontal and some angled up slightly.

Is there a reasoning behind the different angles, or is it due to styling? i notice open class 5's and class 3's nearly always have them horizontal.

I would bet you London to a Brick on, that the reasons are that we generally rebuild Old Sails for our purposes and lower cost than purpose built. I asked my Sail Maker roughly "Emachisit" his reply was $800 to a Grand. Go figure!! So whatever the angle was to start with will only be altered slightly when remolded.
I have 3 sails and one spare all have different Batten Angles.

Mostly you want a sail that when fully sheeted in the battens are parallel to ground. This can change if a sail designed for one yacht is used on a yacht with a different mast angle or cant be sheeted in as much, or a stifer or more flexible mast.
