Hi all

please be patient with me and I'm asking that you refrain from jumping down my throat. I need help...I hate to admit that I've always had a Dad or a partner to do some of the blokey stuff on board and my skill set is seriously lacking...but now, I'm all grown up and doing it alone. I don't intend just using the Forum as a knowledge base...reading heaps and hanging with the right crew in the flesh as well.

Sooooo...first question. I want to keep fuelled up, ready to go whenever I want. Powered by an outboard and have the fuel in plastic jerry cans. Does petrol go 'off'???

As Ramona says yes, I try not to keep it more than 3 months but upto 12 months would be ok. But it would be better keept away from the boat if you can.

May I ask you a strange question? Why must you store it? it takes 10 mins to stop at the servo on the way to the boat.

Hey Trace, good to see you back in the Sailing forum. There are addatives for fuel that is stored for long periods. I haven,t used any myself in trhe 2 stroke but have seen it advertised on I Fish. Water is the major concern in any fuel as we found out on our first trip to Peel in the Boomerang. Check out supercrap or repco they should have some good products.

If petrol is kept in a sealed container, theoreticaly it should retain it's octane level.

A swollen container of petrol on deck (the only place I would store it) could benefit from an occasional dousing of cooler water.

Officially it's good for aviation use for 2 years if stored in a full, sealed, air tight container. I'd read that as at least 10 years for most Earth-bound uses if stored likewise.
