Hi,

I am about to go an a small voyage down the coast and would like to purchase some kind of navigation tool.

Are there any hand held devices that will tell me where i am relative to the coast? So i know how far i have travelled between two points, the speed and other basic stuff. Preferably with a visible map of the coast and my boats position.

Thanks for any recommendations.

Visible map & GPS, well for the same reason I use Garmin GPSMAP 78 SC.
Nice little unit, bit thirsty on batteries, from eBay.
Make use the unit comes from local suppliers, otherwise will not have all AUS charts.
Alternatively, go for basic hand held and paper charts.

iPhone and navionics app
Assuming you have an iPhone , even stoned pirates have em these days , then it is the cheapest chart plotter by a country mile. speed reading is a bit iffy but , whatever
Oh yeah don't forget to stick it in a zip lock bag

Ok, i have settle on the garmin 72H.

Coupled with this map: www.mapworld.com.au/products/aus-755-cape-peron-to-cape-naturaliste

Will these two things tell me where i am along all points from mandurah to bunbury?

I have a Garmin 72 I carry as a backup unit. These are a fine unit although not the easiest to use. I suggest you set in waypoints in the comfort of your lounge room before you go. Lots of them. Insert all the points of interest, ports, headlands etc.

Carry plenty of batteries, if you leave it on the batteries last only a few hours.

Buy the chart, probably need it for local regulations anyway. While its new, scan or photo sections of the chart and enlarge and print out a series of pages to cover your trip. Fitted into plastic coated book form use these to add a written log of your adventure. Update your position every half hour or so.

Garmin 76Csx has a bigger screen than the 78 and batteries last longer.

It is very easy to setup waypoints on a PC then upload to the 'device'.

How does Insurance view iPad/iPhone navigation if something goes wrong?

If you want protection for the IPhone I kitesurf with mine in a lifeproof case, not cheap but cheaper than a new phone.
Used on a IPhone 4 & now 5 and never had an issue, waterproof to 2m etc.

Bit off topic, but if you have a spare 15mins, check out this TED video.

Fascinating and frightening.

After my iphone 4s told me I was sailing through an island that I was 1km west of (Garden Island, WA) ,
I purchased a very similar gps add on.
The Bad elf gps unit plugs into the charging socket of an ipad or ipad.
The plug in itself has a socket so you can power up the ipad/iphone and the add on gps at the same time.

I believe the ipad has the same gps chip as the iphone 4s - so you have been warned.

Bad elf also makes a wifi version like the one you posted the link to.
I have the small plug in version and one of my mates owns the wifi bad elf version.
Both extremely accurate in the 2 years we've had them.

I prefer inavx to navionics. More functionality - maps basically the same.

I've been using isailer for a year or so now, on the iPad, and seems to copy over to the iPhone via blue tooth or I cloud or something.

Works great, very accurate and was pretty cheap too

you pay for what you use, so yes.
But you'll pay more, most likely, than just Australia.
