Hi Peeps, I had a call this morning from Canoeing WA confirming that SUP will be included in this years Avon Descent race although not the full course. The start will be at Middle Swan Bridge nearthe womens prison, on the Sunday 6th August and we will be racing to A.P. Hinds Reserve in Bayswater (the finish of the Avon). The course is flat water with no rapids and almost exactly 15km in length. This is part of the 40th anniversary of the Avon Descent celebrations. Dragon boats and Outriggers are also included this year for the first time. We will have more information on finer details as they come to hand. Start training as this will be an excellent race over some of the most picturesque sections of the Swan River. Truly excellent that SUP is now being noticed and included in some Kayak/Ski/Canoe races. For those that are outside of WA, the Avon Descent is one of the most gruelling two day kayak events in Australia with racers racing flat water as well as rapids. This is a huge event, and awesome for us to be allowed to compete. DM

Wow that's awesome! I was wondering how they were going to get past the issues of the tea trees and rapids. Good news for SUP in WA and the coverage on the TV should be great for its profile as well. Rob

Good news. Having done the Avon descent in a kayak 3 times I'm grateful that its a" leisurely" 15 kms and you don't have to wake up in the freezing cold Avon Valley on Sunday after a gruelling day one. Two things I hope don't come about is the afternoon seabreeze that always seemed to be in your face as you plug away at those last 15kms of flat water and also I hope they don't charge us full price for entry ($200)! It is a great event to be involved in as it has such a strong community base of average joes right up to the elite paddlers. Be good to have a strong SUP presence and also investigate some more challenging sections of the river we could paddle.

Great. Im keen for this please keep us infomred Darren. As part of my current mid life crisis I am just about to enter the 1/2 (mini) anoconda adventure race in Augusta and the Cape to cape MTB race in Late October, so throwing in the August SUP paddle will fit in well...

Hi Everyone Yes the course is the shorter course from fish market reserve in Guildford. I met with CWA 2 weeks ago to decide the course and SUPWA has submitted a risk management plan for the event. It should be a great event. I was going to release the deatils with the event poster next week when it is printed. Cheers Greg
