Hi all, anyone used a bent shaft sup paddle (Werner etc.)? I've got some wrist pain in my right wrist from flatwater kayaking due largely to feathering (60 degrees) on my paddle used in marathons. I'm keen to get into SUP (been a non-sup surfer for 35yrs plus) and thought the bent shaft option would reduce stress on the wrist, especially on the catch. I'm baulking a bit on the $550 ask for a new Werner bent shaft, so would appreciate opinions on them, or any tips on wrist pain- how to deal with it; treatment, supplements etc. Thanks.

I've used it and I was very exited about the idea behind it.. Kialoa make them for their OC paddles so I thought they must be a good idea.. I wondered why they don't make them for sup .. But to be honest.. After trying it it's not that good.. IMO

The shaft feels thick, heavy and cumbersome.. There is a slight ease on the lower wrist but only if you grab it full fisted like you do when using a hammer.. We don't tend to do that anyway.. The catch part of the stroke feels good but the release part doesn't.

Look back through pics of recent world class races and see how many use the bent shaft.. Even most of the Werner sponsored paddlers don't.. It seems ike 99% of paddlers don's use it and that's for a reason.

Try and find a shop with one and ask for a demo before buying .. You might even like it.. But I didn't.. I'd love to hear from anyone here that's using one and hear what their thoughts are.. Maybe it's something you just need to get used to.

IMO.. If you want to help with your wrist pain try a paddle with a smaller blade and maybe a shaft with more flex.
