Just got the info sheet on the Tech Race and marathon and it says you need a PFD for the BOP! Is that normal for that style of racing?

It is not normal for PFDs to be required in a Technical race but I agree, it does imply that you need one for that race in one part of the document but not in another part so a bit confusing. It also says somewhere there that inflatable type PFDs can be borrowed from Surfing NSW for the Marathon.

Not sure how the Aussies will run but this is how it went down at the NSW State Titles (run by the same mob as the Aussies): - Technical Race (BOP style through the surf) = no PFD required - Marathon Race (on Port Stephens) = PFD required but supplied by the organisers Might be the same but also could be different. I'm so helpful.

I think it is supplied by organizers.

Please note: Life jackets will be compulsory at National Titles for marathon races. States are encouraged to adopt same policy at State Titles or, at minimum, follow State legislation. A bum bag style pfd (type 1) will be available to each competitor for the marathon race at check in. All competitors must wear this or alternatively another pfd (type 1 / 2 or 3) in the marathon race. Personal pfd Life jackets are to be provided by the competitor. Anyone see the contradiction there? Or maybe they're just saying they are providing a bumbag inflatable, but if you want to use your own PFD, you have to bring it. (like, no **** Sherlock )

This is from the separate ASF SUP Race Course Maps Information document: Sprint Technical Race (in and out of waves)  Day, Date & Location Sunday 19 or Monday 20 August 2012 (depending on conditions)  Location: Beach Options include: Town Beach, Flynns beach, Lake Cathie, Middle Rock, Bonny Hills, North Haven (call event hotline from 6.30am on the day for the confirmed competition location)  Communication: Event hotline will specify location daily, registration and brief will take place at the confirmed location  Board sizes & Age Divisions: 12'6 and under, Open Men, Open Women, Open Over 40  Conditions & Distance: Approximately 6KM  Brief Race Guidelines: Courses as specified below and or instructed on the day  Safety Requirements: PFD's, leg ropes, competitor registration and attendance at safety brief are mandatory for all competitors However I think it's a mistake and only appears in that document. Hopefully Surfing Australia will drop by to confirm.
