I just realized that although I am strong enough to carry a 10ft SUP to the water, I can't lift it high enough to get it on or off the roof racks. Anyone else have this issue? How long did it take you to build up the strength? Also, are there any tricks that could help me lift it?
My friend Dawn gets a neighbour to help her get board on car firstly....then does the head/shoulder transfer to get board off the car.
Think she now can get board back on car okay herself but especially on windy days looks helpless & seeks the assistance of any strong looking passerby
She got a Naish 11'4 which is actually quite light...but it is a matter of experimenting & finding the balance point of the board
The local Kayak shop nearby has a set of roof racks that unfold from the roof to about waist high. I went over to help the lady to get her 18foot Ocean kayak off the roof the other week and she just unfolded the rack with the boat attached.

Bwahahaha! That is brilliant!!! Love it!
Thanks guys. Hubby tells me to "toughen up princess". Guess I am gonna have to start working out to lift my own board!

Have registered Gizzie !!... thats pretty much me...the Naish is light but awkward..even now takes some attempts to raise it above my head to inch onto roofrack... usually someone around to help...
Use ladder racks and rollers, check the Rolla Rack website. They use the rollers for small boats on car roofs and the ladder end/rack will stop them from going sideways.
Failing that buy a 6,2

Yeah he is that....actually while he frowns on sups allegedly because they have thick rails & excess volume he is partial to paddling out on a windsurfer board when conditions are lumpy & bumpy & biggish.
But you know what that surfco.nz forum is like ...they are like mad dogs running in circles nipping & snapping at each other....not a forum moderator in sight
If you get a padded boardbag, amongst other benefits, it will likely help you with loading and unloading onto/off racks.
1) The board bag will likley have a handle.
2) The padded nature of the bag means you don't need to be able to control the board quite as much to place it delicately on the racks.
Hope this makes sense.
