Naish have a new board coming that's a 12'6" long flat water race board and it's called the Catalina. I've heard that it's been designed with a tail shape that allowed it to be surfed on a wave for events like the Battle of the Paddle. It looks pretty fast and narrow but the sunken deck should make it very stable.. It should be available here in a couple of months time. This pic was posted on the StandUpZone forum. DJ

Look like they are trying a few different handle positions. Looks good ! Drain holes look practical, as extra handles. What did I tell you DJ ?? "Look out for a Naish 12'6 Glide !!" Top Left of picture.... What is that !!! ???

I can't see how that tail design will make it suitable for the battle of the paddle ??? you really need a squarer tail for stability in the waves. Rob

DJ, thought you said that Robbie wanted to steer clear of these types of designs and make more surfboard type SUPs? Nothing against it, I think it is great as the depressed deck is great for certain conditions and races.

Really? I took my 12' glide out surfing on the weekend. It has the same tail and was super stable. I never bought it for surfing but it did a pretty reasonable job of it.

What they said^^^^ The square tail on the Nasih 14 is one of its greatest assets. Like everything else, comment reserved until board is under foot in the water which is the really test. I like the scupper / handle concept great for beach starts although may be a little far back. Looks like a sunken deck 12'6 Javelin. All in all looks like a good board. Weight?????? Volume?????? are the slots where the seatbelt mounts? (just joking) if the centre of gravity is lowered by 20-30mm is it really gunna make much difference? I dont understand the dug-out thing. ps. I dont like the look either.

Hey PS, Having paddled 3 of the dug out style boards they definitely are easier to paddle in rough conditions. my guess is 20% more stable than similar width / length / thickness board with similar rocker. The more stable you are the more power you get to the water and less fatigue in longer races. More power more speed. Phill

i don't mind the look of it. even with tail, it's got a reasonable area to it. one thing that bothers me from my experience from the foot wells we put in my 14' is how you are going to quickly get out of the recess to do a kick turn. my boards is flat water racer, but if the catalinas is a bop style board i would think a nice slope of the back of the recess would allow you to quickly move back and froth cheers ps i think it looks a goer

Doggie: I know exactly what Doggie was saying.... It would be very interesting to see a 12'6 with a square tail, or even a rounded pin / fuller pin, just to give the board that extra bit of stability.... Although, this does look stable. Lacey: I was thinking the same thing, a more gentle slope out of the back of the recess, so you don't trip up if you are walking back onto the tail section !! PS - I'm already looking forward to the 2012 Glide line up of boards ! Constant improvements / refinements.

I believe Dogman was pulling into barrels at Noosa last year on the 12 glide! So with enough skill anything is possible. Doesnt mean it works for the average punter though Phill
