http://www.communityrun.org/petitions/stop-giant-fishing-trawler-in-tasmaniahttp://www.communityrun.org/petitions/stop-giant-fishing-trawler-in-tasmania Stop the Super TrawlerTo: The Australian Fisheries Minister 71,958 of 75,000 signatures 71,958 of 75,000 signatures -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Campaign created by Rebecca Hubbard We call on the Australian Government to reject the fishing trawler, FV Margiris, and its plan to plunder our ecologically important small pelagic fishery. For more go to stopthetrawler.net Why is this important? One of the world's biggest fishing trawlers with a history of over exploiting fish stocks, the FV Margiris, wants to trawl for small pelagic fish – some of the most critical species in our marine ecosystem. Small pelagic fishing around Tasmania already has a bad record. The surface schools of jack mackerel that were once common off southeast Tasmania have not returned after the collapse of that fishery over 20 years ago. The fish are a vital food source for important species like the critically endangered southern bluefin tuna, marine mammals, seabirds and game fish. Trawlers like this not only catch the target species, they also get tonnes of bycatch - unwanted marine life like dolphins, seals and seabirds, that gets thrown back dead. This fishing trawler is the opposite of the fishing activities we need to ensure healthy oceans and healthy communities – we need better valued seafood that doesn't rely on government subsidies, sustainable employment for local fishermen, science based fisheries management, and no unwanted by-catch. They'll stop when there's no more fish to fish for and then they'll go.. Doh!.. It stinks big time.. and I'm not talking about the fish smell.. The buggers! I don't get it that we can't catch a fish slightly undersized yet they can scoop up everything (big and small) and don't care about the damage they're doing. DJ

Yes stop this . I think we need to farm our fish locally rather than have these factories cruising the globe. Please sign the petition if you think this kind of fishing is wrong .

The fish they catch is mostly used to make fish meal which is used to feed the fish in the fish farms. Farming is great but what do you feed them, they still need to eat fish, not that I'm for it just there is a lot more to the discussion. There is a good thread in the LB room about it although it's a bit old, there is also one in Gen forum ATM. http://www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/General-Discussion/Chat/FV-Margiris-2/
I,m sure we could find enough European carp to make fish pellets to feed our farmed fish . Kill to fish with one stone so to speak !!

STOP THE SUPER TRAWLER I got the text of this letter from the Greenpeace site. I'm sending it to joe.ludwig@maff.gov.au Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry "I'm writing to urge you to prevent the FV Margiris from fishing in Australian waters. You and your government have shown genuine leadership in ocean protection by creating a national network of marine reserves. Your commitments at Rio+20 to halt overfishing were also commendable. Allowing vessels such as the Margiris into Australia's waters will undermine that leadership and the environmental values we all want protected. Super trawlers such as the Margiris have caused irreparable damage to fish stocks in Europe, Africa and the Pacific; they are from the most heavily subsidised fishing fleets in the world. I don't believe these vessels belong in Australian waters. The global fishing fleet is 2.5 times greater than the oceans can sustain; rather than allowing these ships new grounds to fish, we need to reduce the global fleet. Capacity reduction should begin with those segments of the fleet that contribute most to stock depletion and ecosystem damage, and least to the social, economic and cultural fabric of coastal communities. Fisheries management should be amended to prevent these vessels from entering Australian fisheries. I call upon your government to investigate the appropriate scale of fishing vessels in Australia given the world's overfishing crisis and the role overcapacity is playing. In particular, the Australian Government should ban all super trawlers and super seiners from fleets that are oversized and over-subsidised - starting with the European Union's freezer trawlers, including the Margiris. Yours faithfully,"

Don't eat fish. The only way I'll eat seafood is if i catch it myself. Sea food is my favorite food and I don't eat it purely because I don't wanna support an industry that hurts the one thing I love more than anything, the ocean. Not preaching, just my way of protest. May be eating less fish or being aware of where it comes from and how its caught or farmed mite help. I dont know the answers, Just a thought. Cheers:)
