Last year my car (containing all my sailing gear) was stolen on new years day whilst I was sailing at Middle Rock. Police called me today as they had recovered it. Forestry worker found it dumped in a cave in the bush. Been sitting there for 12 months in the shelter of a cave. At least the car theif was thoughtful enough to store it properly for me......still hate you though turdburger!

Anyway, a lesson from this. Despite me providing all my stolen gear info (pictures, serial numbers, colour photos) to the police, they did not list it on the internal report they made, and as such if it wasnt for the fact that my car's license plate was dumped with the gear, they would not have known who owned it, and was told it would have been destroyed in due course. Anyway, if you find yourself in the same position as me, insist that all gear is listed properly on their internal reports. MAybe if anyone on this site is a copper, maybe they could furnish us with the proper lingo we should insist on

Rolf the Forestry Worker - some cases coming your way. Donna from the police, you made my day!!! THANK YOU

BTW, If anyone is interested in some 2007 Ezzy wave sails, masts and a 2007 quatro FSW (85L) I will have it listed soon in the buy and sell. Apologise for the shameless plug.

So you found a car full of windsurfing gear in the bush and would like to sell it on here but had to come up with a cover story?

I wish the car was still here, I loved that car and it had a lot of sentimental value.

BTW: I should also thank the thief for not only storing the gear in the bush properly, but also for removing it from the car when they decided they no longer needed the car and burned it weeks later. Despite this extra thoughfulness Mr Thief, I will still run you over if I see you crossing the road

And just like Antiques Roadshow, these items have an interesting provenance, and if kept together, with original documentation, must surely be worth more than equivalent items

Pretty amazing you got your gear back Adam! Stoked for ya, not too often these types of stories have a happy ending

I'm also surprised they put it in a cave in the first place, and then left it there for a whole year and didn't go back and grab it- that is amazing. Must be one of those wealthy, non-strung out junkie theives..lol

Sent ya an email regarding your gear

Nope. I had a small amount of home/contents cover ($800) which covered small mobile effects such as my wetsuits, phone, clothes, shoes, Wife's gymbag which had her watch in it etc but that was it.....I was so dirty that i didnt bother to specify the sporting items as separate cover (which I learnt afterwards was an option)

I now have specified mobile valuables cover via AAMI for my sailing gear just in case it ever happens again

Exactly, just by chance the forestry worker had seen it. The thieves clearly didnt steel for the gear, they were chasing the car and wanted to offload the gear in a place that nobody would find it. prob smart enough to know that there was no market for it locally.

My wallet was found by a country energy worker whilst he was checking lines between laurieton and crowdy head 6 months ago at a completely separate spot in the bush well away from the gear according to the police. I went to the bush to the spot where the wallet was found and walked for klms through the scrub and down pokey bush trackes looking for my gear in case it was dumped and didnt come across anything

AJ,

I was up at Port Mq last week however the weather (wind) despite some good forecasts didn't kick in. I'm curious whether you have sailed Dunbogan? in a ENE/NE. Likewise Crowdy Head in a NE?

Re your sailing gear & the Police - well what can you say, it's just a report. Things like golf clubs/bicycles etc. in vehicles (stolen) always provide difficulties when it comes to claiming on insurance especially when the Police report says '10 speed racing bicycle' when it's a carbon Giant with Di2 dura-ace worth $7500!

Original receipts/dockets and photographs are highly recommended.

Yeah, last week was a big disappointment. Never sailed Dunbogan......my mother in law used to live at camden head so got down there quite a bit for surfing the back beach, but it always seemed too sheltered there for the NE, and too onshore in a southerly (better places which are less onshore up the coast closer to port).

I have sailed Crowdy Bay in a NE. It is dead onshore in that direction. Good fun once you tack out past the shorebreak and get some screaming runs that go for ks, and the backhand waveriding can be real fun given the wind direction, especially at the lauching spot at the surf club as the waves clean up and are less effected by the wind there. Havent sailed it in any other direction. Havent sailed back beach due to the headland and the shelter effect it has. Back beach at Crowdy has always been a bit spooky too

Give me a yell when you are up next so you can get a sail at the better spots. We are getting quite a growing number of sailors here now

Good to hear you got the gear back Adam!

I saw Adam's car a couple of weeks or more after it was stolen just off the main track to Diamod Head, you could barely recognize what make or model it was, it was a totally burnt out shell and looked like it burnt itself out. It must have been intense as the alloy wheels were melted blobs.

Tomp, Dunbogan gets a good wave off the rock mound but is very protected from a NE. North Haven is a better bet in a NE, particularly the swell that approaches the bar opening to the river a few hundred metres out. I reckon it'll be a good backside or frontside ride in a NE. You can pull out of it before it recedes and becomes a point break off the northern breakwall. I still yet to ride it, hopefully this summer....after the water cleans up that is, it's very brown and sharky looking at the moment as is most of the beaches around here.

Adam's the man when it comes to wave spots.

Hopefully catch up with you too on your next trip. Yes our wave community is growing.
