You can only watch it on one tack. :-(

I wear it on my forearm, front arm on speed runs, and can get a sneak look during the run to see how I am going - unless it a really maxed out run of course. Then I only have eyes forward but I know it is going to be a good one anyhow. :-)
To sail back upwind I push it up above my elbow onto my upper arm. Otherwise it spins around the forearm and gets loose.

I don't think the mast is a good place to put the GPS. It will be subject to shock loadings (especially in a catapult!) and high frequency vibrations. It will also be facing slightly down when sailing which will not be good for reception and may cause problems with multipath signal reflection off the water.

The above pic is of Lyn's Etrex taken about 2 years ago. She made slight modification to Paqua ie lengthened the bottom strap so that it goes right around the mast.....I carry a Garmin Legend (which has larger font) in the same manner.
They are easy to rotate a bit after changing tack.
We have had no problems carrying them there and I think the bag absorbs some of the
vibrations and shocks.
We carry our Navi's on our arms.
The Garmins display more fields but we post the results from the Navis.
