Hey,

I was wondering if anyone knew about kiting in NZ? I'm going to the North Island during Feb and I wanted to know what size of kites to take, and how much they're worth second hand over there.

basically i'm looking for a forum like this for nzers.

Thanks
Andy

Try this

http://www.kiteforum.co.nz/phpBB/

Go to taranaki if you get the chance, great surf and wind, sketchy rock bolder launches. Try and get a tide table for the locations you are going to, heaps of great estuary/river mouth set ups with wind against tide helping out for lighter days.

When are you going and for how long?

I will be over for the month of march top of the north island. enjoy

thanks shane. yeah last time I was there I stayed in terranaki and it was windy (like a storm!) and huge every day. But that was July. This time I'll be staying on the north shore and apparently there are a few spots there. I'll be coming home on the 19th of Feb so I won't see you there.

Thinking of taking all my gear and selling it there privately. got to pay for the trip somehow!

By the way, you were pulling some nice riiiiiight upside down back loops today (at cott). I tried to copy one of yours right in front of you but I don't know of I got upside down enough.

Andy I've read that Ragland, a lovely 3x surf point break south of Auckland has a growing a kite scene. Some have said it is one of the top spots in NZ North Island. Most kite in river or on beaches at mouth of river but I reckon kiting at the third inside point break of boat ramps would be possible. The main winds have some westerly in them so either side to onshore at Ragland. I have surfed there many times and it is a epic fun hot doggers wave from 2 feet up to 8 foot. I have'nt kited it but have seen lots of talk about it on NZ kite forum. Very mellow local scene with average surfing level.

PS. Beware of the tides in NZ (especially river mouths)big 2-3 m tides every 8 hours, like clock work. NZ has very fickle surf and wind conditions , so the locals are very much into weather, swell and tide charts, Many spots impossible to surf in out going tide, apart from if you want a quick ride to sydney.

how many of our wa kiters are actually from nz?!?
jonathon, shane, craig, graham (choice), leon. Sorry if I've wrongly accused someone there. And I'm sure there's a heap more.

Thanks for the advice jk. I think I'll go somewhere easy first and ask around. I still haven't booked my ticket yet, I'm not sure I want to leave wa. The conditions are so good as of late...

Leave it until April winds crap here winds crap there.... I know for sure that the wind will be great here in march and crap in NZ its the law of travelling. But typically March/April is good Surf on the East coast.. drolling over some classic river mouth set ups.

I seem to go round the world living in Windy places. Port Elizabeth, South Africa - +/- 60k's from Jeffrey's Bay (known as "the Windy City" there. Now Perth which is windy as you know, but I lived in Wellington in NZ for 4 and that, without a doubt sticks out head and shoulders
as the windiest of them all

Here's a site http://www.wildwinds.co.nz/index.htm

If you're really big and tough try Lyall Bay on a good day. Watch out you
don't get tangled up in a plane landing at the airport runway that sticks
out into it though
