As I sit here on the beach at Altona wishing for something other than offshore wind, I was wondering if anyone has kited here in a NE wind?

I walked out to that little spit of land that sticks out at the southern end of the beach (past the last carpark). If it had just a bit more E in it, it would be blowing cross onshore with quite a bit of water between the main beach / pier and where the spit of land is, for the wind to stabilise. At the moment it is blowing about 8kts, and is fairly consistant. Water is beautiful and flat.

The spit continues along for a while still, so there is even a safety net for self rescue.

Anyone done it? Or am I just desperate for a kite?

I've kited off Point Cook in a NE. Hiked in from Sanctuary Lakes through the wetlands. The angle is better down there but it's a tough swim if something goes wrong while you're a bit offshore and you're alone - like your kite LE pops mid-air, and you can't make up enough ground to overcome the wind. The tide is against you too. After a while the land seems to getting further away and its starting to get dark and you're cold, so your goodbyes to you kite, but wait! a boat comes around the point. The boaties rescues you and your kite that's drifted halfa k downwind... for instance :p

I've been that desperate for a kite. Probs best to find something else to do.

Hey Zarb. Check out Dog Beach near Altona Sports Club at the end of Civic Pde. Now THAT place is awesome in a NE and it's all flat water dude. Only problem?! Those nazi dog owners that think 4 kms of beach is too small for anyone but themselves. i say.... Fk them! Just get out there!!!!!

Kazan, I understand you're excited to be kiting, but as a relatively new kiter maybe don't encourage people to kite where the council has specifically said they don't want people to kite. Especially not in a place where the wind would be blowing off shore.

Ok now I am confused. Which area are you talking about?

I sometimes launch from the last carpark at the end of The Esplanade (near the Apex Park) because there are normally less people and the water is nice and flat at mid-high tide. Is kiting allowed there?

That is the furthest along the beach I suppose you could be before having to walk out on to that spit of land, or are you talking about the closed section of water (almost like a long lake) behind the spit that runs further through the dog park? If so, even if it was allowed, I definitely would not feel safe kiting on such a small section of water.

Ok never mind. I found the place you're talking about on Google Maps. Having worked as a Lifeguard I know how much of a pain it is to enforce surfcraft zones, I think I will stick to the areas I am allowed in. Thanks for the tip though!

Yes. No kiting at the Altona Dog Beach as per the council ban. Anyone kiting there could find themselves giving an explanation to the Water Police.

Don't kite there, and don't troll about it.

Was this meant to "Delete" your comment dredging up the massive debate about kiting in certain locations around Altona?
