I went there in 2010 and thought it was awsome, fantastic fresh food, beautiful scenery but came pre packaged with a very dark history. Abo's being pushed off cliffs, prison island, mass killer Marin Bryant, pervert Andy Muirhead etc. Really want to go back there though and visit Mona, the state govt seem to be doing tons of stuff to kick on the arts there. My artist mates who now call Tassie home reckon it's been dead for so long, maybe the govt thinks that arts will revitalise the state.

The thing I picked up on is that the locals didn't seem to have much sense of pride in themselves or their state - I was only there for two weeks. The peeps I met just looked at the ground and kicked rocks around.

If I was to sum up Tasmania from my two week visit, I'd say the place is jinxed.

If i could sum up you in a word , id say politely your way of the Mark. Tasmanians are on a whole great people , friendly and loyal. All of Australia and the world for that matter has a checkered past when it comes to Aboriginal people and people who are deranged like Bryant. Hopefully the arts will give the State a kick a long , along with tourism , lets just hope they dont let mining in the Tarkine. Glad they only had put up with you for two weeks.

Great place to visit but I COULDN'T live there - way too cold for me

A couple of mates and I rode across from Perth in the mid eighties - silly me on a Ducati.... We arrived on Chrissie day and when the shops opened a couple of days later the first thing I did was buy a balaclava to wear under my helmet 'cos it was quite often freezing cold while riding.

We had about 2 great weeks of fantastic scenery and plenty of near death experiences on roads that aren't actually straight with patches of moss and ice on some corners just to wake us up.

30 years later I reckon there's probably not much changed but it's about time for another look I guess ---- this time in a comfy camper not a tent and way too thin sleeping bag Maybe soon I hope.

Went in 2011 for 4 week holiday with the missus to visit some of her rellies... car was sideswiped just as we got it off the ferry, the truckie that did it was so hopped up I was amazed that he could even bloody walk. Camera bags were stolen from the car in Burnie, after they smashed the back passenger window. Car was stolen from a car park in Hobart, buggers actually put in on a flatbed tow-truck according to a car park attendant who didn't query it as he thought it was a breakdown.
At a party the mother-in-law invited one of the missus's ex's, who decided after a few beers that I was the reason his life was so s**thouse and tried to repeatedly stab me with a carving knife; I was the one who got in the s**t from her family and the bloody cops for breaking his arm whilst disarming him.
Tassie's a lovely place, I'm just glad it's so far away and separated from the mainland by a bit of ocean...

I have just spent 3 months (09Jan-15Apr) on the Island State and can't wait to go back.
Amazing country, landscapes, seascapes, local produce and friendly people.
Did from Cockle Creek in the south, east coast to Low Head and Georgetown, took in the V8's at Simmons Plains (about 30k from Lonnie), Latrobe just out of Burnie across to Stanley and down to Queenstown.
3 months just wasn't enough time.
Mind you it was getting a wee bit chilly when I left.

Born in Tassie (Burnie). Saw industry die at then hands of the greens and all my mates leave for the mainland.
In WA now and there is no way I would go back to the land of very limited/ no opportunity.
There is only so many people that can make a living out of Eco tourism. The rest are left to eek out a living in an economic basket case.
Yes it's scenic, yes it's bloody cold and yes the radical side of the greens has stuffed it for everyone else if you are not a tree hugger.
Staying in WA where there is opportunity to get ahead. None of my mates have moved back to tassie, in fact, most of their parents have left as well if they don't have work with the public service.
A real shame.

At the same time there's only so many times you can cut down virgin old growth rainforest. Once to be precise. It's a small island, 3hrs drive side to side is it? So how sustainable was it really? Especially considering globalisation, Asian virgin rainforest being massacred, and the distance Tassie wood has to travel and still be competitive on the open global market. Sorry but from a $$ perspective a woodchippers wonderland isn't a sustainable future for Tassie either, regardless of greens your mates would have had a hard time surviving in a dying industry.

It ain't all about trees. Mass hysteria keeps the mainlanders focused on trees.
Massive mineral wealth has been kept under lock and key.
High tech industries have also left. Sustainable power generation for base load (hydro) also suffered as most equipment is over 40 years old now. No new investment there.
Farming has also suffered.
Bit blinkered just to focus on the trees. But a good point, it's one of the only remaining industries Tassie has, so it's the only one that springs to mind.

Been to Tassie twice - first time did the tourist thing with the preggo missus & 2yo & loved it. Left early & planned the day driving from Launceston to Hobart via St Helens. The missus spent the whole trip spewing (awesome road!) whilst I thought our old Patrol was a rally car. 1pm drove into Hobart after realising that the scale on the map was about twice the size of what I was used to. We visited Pt Arthur & absorbed the history of the area. Drove to the top of Mt Wellington & nearly went off the road due to black ice...when we got to the top, I was the only one brave enough to get out of the car as it was below zero!

Second time went for mate's buck's weekend a couple of years ago & stayed at the Launceston Country Club (casino/golf club). Had a ball, not that we got out much - played very bad golf at Barnbugle Dunes, then back to the casino. Went out a few times to the local bars around the villas...only to be called a pool shark & hear the phrase "phkn mainlanders" a hundred times from a local barfly who had an awesome platted beard but kept flashing his pocket knife at us.

Next time, I'd love to check out the West Coast. Tassie's a great place!

I had a reply typed ready to go but decided against it as if this turns into a debate on the "Greens Policies" it will end up in heavy weather.

Suffice to say the Tasmanian economy is in shambles but the Island State is still open for business.
I love the place, I hate the weather.
And to pinch a line from the NT.

Massive mineral wealth has been kept under lock and key....

I work in that industry so I'm not exactly a greenie. One of the jobs I've done is making plans on how to best dig up 4000 hectares of nature reserve in QLD. It would be offset with 10,000 hectares of 'similar' bushland next door... but how are all the animals that make up an ecosystem supposed to magically transport themselves 50kms to their new home? That's a question these offset schemes forget.

Minerals require big infrastructure which Tassie doesn't have. Everything would have to come in by ship, at big extra cost. Economies of scale wouldn't work there because you would be starting from scratch. I mean for example the bowen basin coal deposit is bigger than the whole of tassie (by my eye) and it's riddled with heavy rail tracks, highways and airfields for FIFO, and has access to 5 or 6 coal ports in case 1 goes down. Supply and product lines are established, along with equipment spares, contractors, suppliers, trained workers, regulators, accomodation, etc.

From Tassie the product would have to be shipped to Woolongong type area before you could compete dollar for dollar with coal going north from NSW. Unless it was of remarkable quality (best in the world) then the $$ wouldn't stack up for this to happen - bowen basin coal is already up amongst the best on the market in terms of quality.

Anyway, I've got family in Launceston, been twice and again this xmas. Love the beaches, food, traffic but I couldn't deal with the cold. We were standing on a beach in december at midday in jeans and jumpers. Nuff said.

Wasn't that funny Tux... we had to fly back to Perth as the car was a write off. When RACWA finally paid up and I bought a new Commodore, they jacked the premium so high it was ridiculous enough for me to get off my bum and get quotes from other car insurers, and found that the buggers had been over charging me for years. The premium on the new car with GIO was 20% cheaper than the previous years bill for a 2 year old car.
Plus had the enjoyment of staying with my tree hugger mother-in-law, who as it turned out hates my guts because I make a living in the mining industry.

Tassie is a great place. Very scenic. Spectacular wilderness.
Try the National Park Summit Challenge. 3 big summits in 3 days.
Cradle, Pelion East and Ossa in 3 days. You can add Pelion West, Oakleigh, Olympus, and the other summit near The Labyrinth, and you'll have done 7 in 7 days.
