Do it! You won't regret it. Best sport in the world and a SUP is a great tool for learning on.

When too windy to SUP go windsurfing, perfect all bases covered.

great work dj. i'm just about to get the mk11 version of the 12' glide supsailer on the water but have yet to add a waist harness and lines. got any recommendations on brands/ models plus i notice that you are hook up when i thought that hook down was the trend

Thanks everyone .. I hope this vid shows the feeling of speed that you don't see in most vids and when watching from the shore.. It really does feel like you're moving at a million miles an hour.. Looking back at your wake in the water shows just how fast you really are going.. Windsurfing SUP boards can be lots of fun and these boards are perfect for anyone learning to windsurf.

That 12' Glide should go great.. As far as waist harnesses go you can't go wrong with DaKine.. They've always been the best out there until recent years when other brands including Naish are probably just as good.. My harness is actually what they call a surf-seat and has two leg straps that stop the harness moving or riding up like the older waist harnesses used to do.. It also positions the hook a little lower.. It's just what I'm used to.. Like the hook up thing.. Because I started windsurfing in prehistoric times they were all hook up to start with.. Maybe it was a yachting thing.. but anyway a few years later they changed to hook down.. Not sure why.. Maybe it's a safety thing because when you need to unhook in a hurry you just pull the boom towards you slightly and the harness line drops out.. Kiters like the hook down also because the pull is often from up high so there's less chance of the harness line slipping out of the hook unexpectedly.. btw.. I've heard that kiting harnesses have a slightly different hook shape to windsurfing harnesses and a kiting harness might be hard to hook into and unhook from.. Check with the shops.. Anyway.. Us older guys that got so used to hook up found it too hard to change because we were just so used to it.. I think you are better with hook down.. As for harness lines don't make the mistake of getting them too short.. They come in different lengths.. and even adjustable now.. I like to be able to get my elbow to wrist inside the loop for the right length.. You want your arms almost straight when hooked in and not bent too much at the elbow.. I'm sure the shops can give you the right advise there.

Anyone local to me wanting advise or help setting up their gear or tips on learning feel free to contact me.. I'm happy to help when I can..

thanks dj, i was thinking of adjustable lines but i'm not sure whether to go seat or waist but hook down sounds logical

Nice vid DJ. I think you need to put your down winding fin to try to stop that fin cavitation and tail slide.

I'm an old school wind surfer - used to use a hook up harness so when you trimmed or pumped the sail with your back arm the harness line wouldn't drop out of the hook.

It would be a fairly cheap and easy thing to have a short 6" fin box fitted to the beck so you can attach a mast base.. Just a thought..

Great vid and camera angle. My 11.6 nalu sails well and is great fun in light winds although not as much fun as my ws boards. Anyone considering taking up windsurfing should - I love sup'ing but if the wind is right... there's only one option for me.

In saying that - had a great sup sesh this morn!

Hey,

When going for a windSup, does anyone else find it awkward to carry the board and rig together, not having a footstrap to control the tail of the board with?

I've been windsurfing for a few years and just bought a Naish Nalu 1065 to SUP during the off times. If you get the chance DJ, are you able to tell me what size sail and wind strength you had on the day. You seem to be planing along very nicely in what appears to be pretty light conditions.

I was using a big 5.7 wave sail and it was stronger wind in that vid than it looks.. Maybe 20-25 knots but in that spot (Point Ormond, Elwood) the wind is gusty and a bit off-shore in close and also a bit sheltered from the strong guts.. I think for light wind wave sailing the stock fin would be fine but for what I was doing in strong gusty wind a lightly bigger fin would work better.

If we get the forcast 20 knots north wind tomorrow I might give the 10'10" Nalu a go with a sail and see if those channels on the bottom help to get it up on the plane.

I agree.. It is tricky.. I think taking the board and rig down to the waters edge seperatly is the way to do it.

Hi DJ

Have the same Sup myself with a 5.8 Rally. taken out a few times and had a bit of trouble returning to the same spot on the beach. ie seemed to have trouble maintaining height??

Was a gusty day last time from 5 - 15 knots and shifty so this may have been the issue.

Any thoughts re a larger centre fin maybe??

Ha.. .. No rail riding or me.. I never did stand on the center board.. Standing on the rails works just fine..

I was wanting to try a duck jibe a try not to hit myself in the head with my GoPro mount.. or even a high speed lay down jibe but I didn't have the confidence planing through a jibe with that fin... Next time..

I plan to use a 9-10" dolphin fin next time.

You could see in my vid I ended up coming in a little down wind from where I took off from.. At leat there was no one around to do 'the walk of shame' in front of..

I think you sometimes have a choice.. Head off and get on the plane and have some fun.. or keep creeping up wind so you can make it back to where you started from.. I like the first option..

A deeper pointer type fin should get you up wind a lot easier but they are not so much fun going off the wind and jibing.. Still.. I might try the stock fin from my 14' Glide next time and see how that goes.

Awesome vid.. I'm guessing that wasn't with the stock fin.. Or was it? .. I'll have to lend Spotty my camera mount..

I'd love to get my Nalu down to Sandy Point one day.. Going that fast strapless has gotta be hairy..
