As a general rule in the months Oct - Feb you get a NW seabreeze (cross onshore) which peaks in strength at about 3-4pm (15-22kn). In the cooler months, May - Sept. you'll get easterly winds (cross shore)peaking at 10am-Noon (18-22kn). I have kitesurfed a fair bit up here as the winds are quite consistant. There is a good spot close to town, (a sand spit that curves out about a 800m into the sea) you can kitesurf this spot in pretty much all wind directions and there will always be one part which has smooth water and uniterupted winds.

There are big tidal movements (upto 7m in 6 hours) but this spot is still kiteable on all tides.

Having only just started kiting since sept 04, I have been searching the hedland area for 'the perfect bit of beach'

Hedland is rocky, with gritty sand and sharp shells, really bad things to have speaking as a learner whos kite hits the ground alot.
I'm in agony just setting my rig up on the beach when burying it

an hours drive north is where 80 mile beach starts, bit of a hike. not much good after work.
but a good weekend away. nice white sand.
